Re: Best rear gears for 700r4
I have one of each. A 3.73 and a 3.42. If you have a 3.73 in your truck your 700r will work well. If you are going to change the gear ratio I would recommend the 3.42 ratio. It is the best overall package!

Ćall Randy's ring and pinion. They can tell you what options each axle has. My guess is you can use what ever axle you currently have.

No but it kind of defeats the purpose.

Re: Best rear gears for 700r4
If you're going to pull/haul anything heavy, running a 700R4/4L60 in 3rd (direct drive) is a good idea. Once you're on the roll, up shift to OD- kind of like a boat coming up on plane. If you're doing stop-n-go, up hills or extremely heavy loads, keep it in 3rd. Fuel mileage sucks, but it should be cheaper than a new transmission. Saw way too many in the trans shop, and it was brutal. If you're pulling heavy stuff, all the time, run a 4L80- they're made tough to play rough.

Re: Best rear gears for 700r4
Just be sure to lock the converter (I have a switch to manually lock the converter in 1st,2nd,or 3rd) if you stay in 3rd pulling or hauling anything heavy.
I often ride the back country roads in 3rd, I lock the converter and its just like a straight drive accellerating and slowing (engine braking).

Thanks Kevin.... I checked with my local independent mechanic and he said it would run around $100 to install the gears. I'm not sure I want to invest $300 to put 3.42's in the Burb... I'm just a tight a$$ I guess... LockDoc

Re: Best rear gears for 700r4
I have 3.73s in my 68 C10 and also in my 77 GMC Sprint with a built 454 and they both work great. About 2100 rpm at 70 mph..

Re: Best rear gears for 700r4
Looks like 3:73 is the most common but 3:42 would be the ticket. How hard is it to change out the gears to get a 3:42? Anybody in the waco, temple, or Killeen area willing to advise and or demonstrate? Lol....

Re: Best rear gears for 700r4
You can get 3.42s from a common and cheap (if not free) later rear. That's what I did,and my ring & pinion needed replaced anyway. If not for having no O/D for now,an possibly never,I'd run 3.73s or 4.10s just because I prefer gears with grunt and O/D allows that. I have two trucks, the ones I drive most, with 4.10s & O/D. The tires are tallish (both 4wds) and I can run along 75 mph all day no problem. For me,3.08s "is" O/D. It's too tall to go with O/D,IMO. 3.42 is the sweet spot for with or without O/D
