Re: 1972 GMC C-?? 4x4 pickup with 71 series power

Ok some updates... installed new 7/8 rear u bolts to repair originals where they waere almost rusted thru and to install lower shock mounts,,, Rancho RS5034 - Rancho RS5000 Shocks 19" compressed 34" extended will fill the bill with a 28" unladen ride height...

also found an air cleaner for the Detroit...my back of the envelope engineering says that the 568 inch two stroke will need 1100 to 1200 CFM airflow at 2300 RPM so ooo K&N RU-3100 Air Filter Element, Filtercharger, Conical, Cotton Gauze, Red, 6 in. Diameter Inlet,

was able to move the alternator brackets and alternator from a c/50 SBC right over to the front of the big Detroit using holes that lined up... I have to make a couple of spacers and get some longer bolts but all in all easy peasy Just plug it in to the wiring harness and go.. have to calculate the belt length... gonna be some pi in my future,...

started tacking in some in some filler panels and got the mirrors moved over...

Re: 1972 GMC C-?? 4x4 pickup with 71 series power

LMC truck had all my sheet metal parts on back order... they should start showing up this week of one can believe the emails...

even More Progress...

radiator from the C-65 dump truck is off to shop to get a new 2.5 inch inlet and a quick dip and reconn.... the outlet was fine and the original hoses from the 427 truck will work fine (new of course) on the Detroit. GM did a nice job with engineering in the early days..

I test fitted the inter fenders and they should go on without a hitch as they are outboard of the frame... that Detroit took all of the engine bay and half the cab but it is Sooo Cool

Hooked up the Detroit fuel cutoff to the Choke...

nice to have 4 trucks worth of parts to choose from...

Glad to see this project back in work. This thing will be a beast once its done. Can't wait to see your ideas to close up the inside area around that engine.

Nice to see I am not the only one crazy about these trucks. I too will be grafting front fenders on the rear.
I still have the 67 327 running strong in this C50. I swapped in a TopKick rear to get rid of the widow makers and make room for super singles.

Yeah I was lucky I had Dayton style hubs to begin with... and I had 10 refurbished rims and 11R22.5 rubber already from the L9000 donor Semi or I would have gone Super Singles too... but alas we all have budget limits... and the 4x4 dually is growing on me..

I think you need a big inch chevy like a Donovan or Arias motor with a blower... light up those big wide tires... looks kinda Pro-Street

My drive train budget is at it's end so no giant motor. The 454 will have to do. I would love to have a Big Diesel, maybe next time.

Alternator, air filter, and Shocks.... grille shell is next... then battery cables and oil pressure sender...

waiting on hydra-boost and master cylinder... gonna reuse the single line brake master as the clutch master...

need to get it running and driving so I can get it to the shop this fall to finish the bodywork inside out of the weather.... components were too heavy and truck is too big for lift at shop

just gonna build a dog house out of square tube. I have a bunch of 0.75 tube... all around the perimeter and then some triangulated bracing... and prolly use riv-nuts to make the panels removable... Prolly incorporate a panel for all the SW instruments out of the L9000 trans temp, diff temp, oil temp... and air valve for front axle engage... I will reuse the napco power pack levers for the Transfer Case H-N-L shift and PTO engage.. I have sourced heavy duty push pull cables for this to avoid linkage... and will relocate them to the floor between the seats... also need to put the runaway valve trip handle there as well...

the driver side foot well feels a little like an astro van LOL...

Re: 1972 GMC C-?? 4x4 pickup with 71 series power

one more tidbit in gearing on the 71 series diesel swap... the 350 Chevy had a redline of 4500 RPM and a 1:1 5th gear. with 8.25-20 tires (38") and 7.20:1 gears in the axles it would run 55 MPH wound out...

the Detroit redlines at 2250 RPM (its turned up to 2300) so I had to do something to be able to run highway speeds... so in come the 11R22.5 tires at 44" tall and the RTO trans with a 0.87 OD and the Rockwell T-1138 transfer case with its 0.73 OD ratio in High range... (1.72 in Low) Excel spreadsheet says I should get 65 MPH at 2300... I have the option of swapping the the input gears on the trans to make a home brew RTOO but that is down the road than it would put me in the very high end of driveshaft speed.

a 6v-53 would have made a better choice for power plant (RPM and physical dimensions) but I didn't have one of those for free...

Re: 1972 GMC C-?? 4x4 pickup with 71 series power

the weather has broke in the finger lakes and the truck project is on the move...

have the radiator back form the shop and I picked up a 92/85 Gal fuel tank and brackets for the project. the brackets are getting powder coated.

LOL the front has 9000lb springs and it could use a leaf or two with that 3300 lbs of detroit and roadranger, the rears have no helpers and I drove it around for a while with the 350 in it and seems fine... gonna have 85 gal fuel tank in the back (600 lbs) and the transfer case weights nearly 1000 lbs by itself too... i have to add the hydraulic pump and tank which is about 400 lbs... I have a LWB C50 Chevy for parts that I am making a matching tandem TAG trailer out of to haul around...

Re: 1972 GMC C-?? 4x4 pickup with 71 series power

Ok, I forget maybe some are set up softer than others, my truck is a SWB ( like 137") with a GVW of about 32K . it was set up bare rails as a Road tractor and it is STIFF as in I pulled the motor and trans ( BB gas) and set them along with 4 tires and the radiator on the back and got ZERO sag.. I mean still right at the top... I KNOW I am going to have to soften mine a bit

with a GVW under 26k it will not be a commercial rig at least it would not be here, no inspection of any kind required. I am sure some states will have other requirements.

Re: 1972 GMC C-?? 4x4 pickup with 71 series power

the truck ic currently registered and insured in NY as historical and has to pass NYSDOT inspection and it is less than 26000 GVW so no CDL required (there are cases where a CDL would be required Pintle hooks and combos with trailers over 10,000 GVW)

Any progress? This is quite a truck.

I'd love to see the RZV500R as well, there's something to be said about a 2 stroke V4.
