Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

I just wrote a long respond and lost it when I went to post, so this will be a bit more abbreviated.
First, whose insurance? Yours or the person that rear ended you?
Second, can you get a comparable truck in your area for the money they are offering you?
Are they using auction prices to determine value? You are not able to go to auctions and must pay retail/ private party pricing.
Third, they figured the cost to repair and repaint the truck (2800) and the salvage cost of the truck (1000) is worth more than they deem the truck is worth, so they total it. Remember they are considering shop prices and parts markup.
Fourth, can you fix it to equal or better than it was before for 2800?
Fifth, if not, is it worth it to drive it like it is and take the money and pay other bills?
Sixth, if not do you take the money and truck, and part it for more than what they seem salvage to be (1000). Then you have more than what they are offering you?
Seventh, if you keep the truck and take the salvage deduction, do not let them mark it salvage. If you decide to keep it and fix it you may have a hard time getting insurance on a salvage vehicle, and resale is less on a salvage vehicle.
Eighth, most of what you have receipts for are maintenance items. The value of the vehicle ( for insurance purposes) does not go up because quality maintenance parts were used, or even that maintenance was performed.
Ninth, I would seriously go back and renegotiate the pricing. Their were trucks at that lambreicht auto auction that didn't run and were in much worse condition that yours that sold for more than 3800.
Remember insurance is a business, for profit. They don't want to pay you what it's worth if they can help it. Your going to have to do some research yourself. Slow down and don't be in a hurry. They want you to make a quick and rash decision. It's very possible your insurance will go up after this, so don't make it easy on them before they try and screw you. Just my .02. Hope it helps! Good luck and let us know what happens.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

I would much rather sell it to someone who would appreciate it for
$1000.00 than to have it picked apart.
It's hard to find anyone though.
I live in Denton, Texas.
I anyone out there knows someone who would like to buy, please let me know.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

To keep it out of a junk yard I would buy it myself but I'd have to wait till spring when I have some money left over from ski season.

That is way too pretty of a truck to let be destroyed due to some lame insurance company.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

Mstates88, sounds like you have several serious offers. Bottom line is don't let that truck go to the scrap yard! I want it, but I'm OK with someone else popping before mid-November. I will take it if the others fall through.

Shawn makes some good points. Only thing I would add, you say it's your daily driver. Was it reliable before the accident? Do you think that you could purchase a reliable classic vehicle for the same amount?

I would purchase it for $1000.

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

I have someone looking at it on Saturday but if they don't want it, it's yours.
I don't have the insurance settled yet though, until I know what's going to happen. It shouldn't take long for me to collect from them and get the paper work.

No brainer Keep Truck and 2800 and either fix up or throw a tailgate on and drive it. Too nice to scrap or part out

Re: my 72 GMC was totaled. Not sure what to do.

I had a minor wreck with mine last year. My insurance paid for some lady's car when she cut out in front of me. I still haven't fixed my truck. Until I can get the moeny saved up to fix her, she'll have a beauty mark. Life of an old truck!

I am serious but suttererman85 spoke up first and I didn't see his post. My intention was to not outbid him etc. With that said if he was to pass I would be interested. I see from the photos it doesn't have power brakes. Is it an automatic?

Careful guys! Don't turn this into a sale thread or it will get shut down. Just FYI.

Others expressed interest earlier in the thread already. Sure looks like its a "for sale" thing already.
