Here is my fuse panel (1972 C20). Where should I hook up to it for HEI, and where for electric choke?

Also, can I just clip and abandon the red wire that the two yellow wires are connected to (to the coil and starter)?

Yes definitely, that is the resistance wire for the coil and the yellow wire is the bypass for 12 volts when starting to give the coil a full shot of voltage when starting. Even better you can trace the red wire back to the bulkhead connector and replace it with a 12 gauge wire for HEI Bat power and have a stock key on ignition.

Here's a diagram of the wiring in the engine compartment.



The wire started life as an orange/white/purple wire from the factory.


To change it you would need to separate the bulkhead connector and remove the packard style connector and crimp or solder a new connector ( available from Napa ) and reconnect the bulkhead connector.

What about electric choke? Where is a good place to get switched 12V for that?

On the photo of my fuse panel above, there are two empty spades on the lower right side above the screw. Near those it says "IGN. UNFUSED", but I'm not sure if that refers to both those. Would that be a good place to find power for the choke (or the HEI)?

For the choke, I use the hot side of the wiper circuit. With a fuse in line.
Get a full 12v for the HEI. I think I went to "Ign Unfused" for that. No fuse. No other splices in that one ...straight to the dizzy. Make sure, whatever the source, it's a full 12v. And only on when the key is in the "on" position.
