Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Cleaned up and measured the deck clearance on the passenger side pistons last night. They're all running between .020" and .024" down. Gonna clean up the drivers side tonight and re-measure everything.

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Well, it looks like I'll be replacing the cam in this engine. 2 lobes going flat, 2 scuffed lifters, and 1 lifter with a broken retainer. First thing I did when I bought the truck was change all of the fluids and the engine oil was filthy. The good news is, so far, everything else looks to be in good shape. I'm going to pull a couple of main caps and check the bearings tonight.

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Checked a couple of the mains last night, the crankshaft and bearings look good. I'm going to go ahead and change the rear main seal while I'm this far into it. I pulled the trigger on a Comp Cams Nostalgia Plus 300HP cam last night. My goal is to have it back running by Super Bowl Sunday

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Got a lot done in the past couple of days. The block's painted as well as the oil pan, timing cover, harmonic balancer, and alternator bracket. I cc'd the heads yesterday evening and each chamber is 76-77 cc's. The pistons are averaging .023" in the hole. I'm going with Clevite Nitroseal head gaskets with a compressed thickness of .026" giving me a quench area of .049". Plugging all the numbers in the trusty old DCR calculator gives me a static CR of 8.94 to 1 and a dynamic CR of 7.56 to 1. Just waiting on parts now!
So this afternoon, me and a buddy of mine changed out the front springs. Did away with the stock front springs and blocks and put a set of 2.5" front springs in her.

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Well, I found another unexpected issue with the motor. Most of my parts are in (still waiting on the cam and lifters) and I've finished painting the engine and detailing the engine compartment, so last night I checked the end play on my crankshaft and it's running .021" to .022". I thought about possibly putting in a .010" oversized thrust bearing, but that would leave me at .011" to .012", which is a little out of spec. I talked with the guys at Performance USA and they recommended against it, especially since I have a manual transmission. So they hooked me up with a local machine shop and I got a .020/.020 crank and a set of matching bearings for $140. I think I'm finally through spending money on the motor!

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Good thing you checked the end play before putting it back together!

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
I gave my headers to my buddy Jeff last week to get them ceramic coated. Just went by his shop and picked them up!

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Plenty of assembly lube used after checking end play right?
The headers look sweet! I wish i had some buddies that worked in auto body right now.

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
Broke in the camshaft yesterday. Changed the break in oil, set the timing, and took her for a spin. Running like a champ! I get my hood back from the painter tomorrow evening.

Re: Project '67 Clone SWB
I've been asked to help on a side project for my buddy David. He just purchased a '64 Malibu project for his wife. 54,000 miles, all original, 283 Powerglide. The car's been sitting for about 18 months. We got it running but are chasing a major vacuum leak, 10" at idle. Yeah I know, it's not a truck but it's a Chevy!
