That cab lifting apparatus is another great idea even for lifting off for the 1st time. I need to figure out how I can save your thread to a zip drive and divide it into chapters. LOL

I've been thinking about that filler neck idea we were talking about and you could do like you were talking and weld it to the patch piece that you put in the truck then glue the rubber grommet in place. Then set back and watch and laugh at anyone that tries to siphon gas out of it.

I will take another pic of it soon. I am posting as many pics as I can. I have been overwhelmed lots of times during this build (the dash and vintage air evaporator is really eating alive right now). So I want to give encouragement to all the other first truck builders out there struggling with confidence.

Re: My build thread- 67 C10 SWB

Shaved the side marker light and replaced the lower right pocket that always seemed to catch all the run off battery acid. Moving the battery to under the truck to solve this problem. This was my "fishing" trip to Carlisle, PA for Spring Swap Meet. One of the fenders was a waste of money (aftermarket). One of the inner fenders was beyond saving. The keeper fender cost $40 and came with the pocket patch.

Are you having to use any body filler where you weld or can a person put weld in and grind down flush enough not to notice the repair. I am a certified pipe welder but haven't done much welding on thin body metal.

Great question, I'd be interested to hear others' experience as well. I've been told by experienced hot rodders and body guys that even with the best weld and grind jobs, a skim coat of filler is needed to finish them out.

I was worried about filler in my build, but no longer. The time it takes to get perfect grinds just isn't worth it to me. Brand new cars on the lot have filler, and so will my '69 C10.

Here is what I have done with the dash: Had to split it into 3 pieces to keep the curves in the dash in proportion to the width of the cab. I won't be using the metal attaching the dash to the windshield permanently, it is just there to help hold it up. I cut the Bel Air dash where it starts to bend down and used the original C10 cross brace and added the metal I needed to fill it in. Eventually, a console will be built. I have bucket seats out of a 93 BMW M3 that I plan on using, picked up on craigslist for $85.

When I first started the build I did not want to use any body filler, but there is only so much you can do with a hammer, dolly, and stud gun (bought one of them as well). Not only that, but these trucks were not made perfect, so I don't think perfection without a little plastic is possible. Maybe if you are that good, but I'm not. The problem I have found is that if you try to fill up too much with weld, you are likely warping the metal around your weld. If you want a show quality paint job, most hot rod builders I have seen (on tv anyways) always use a couple skim coats of plastic over the whole car.

2 steps forward, 1 step back.... Put the engine and transmission into the frame and bolted down. But cracked the alternator bracket trying to get the bolt bushings to loosen up.

Re: My build thread- 67 C10 SWB

Very impressive build, but I just wanted to say that your cab lifting idea with the cherry picker and tow hitch ball is the most genius thing ever. I have a 1 car garage so I can't put my cherry picker on the side of the frame to lift my cab...this looks like the perfect solution, since the cab has no windshield and I'd be able to go through the front.

Are there any other details I should know before building the box and getting the ball hitch, or is it as easy as it sounds?

Thanks! I will take more pics of the box tomorrow night. Cut some grooves in the boards so that the cab won't move around. The weight of the cab will be enough to hold the cab into the grooves. Lift it up very slowly, and also have a heavier person hold onto the cherrypicker handles just incase the jack end wants to tip. My cab is stripped down, so it doesn't weight much right now. I pulled it off the frame by myself once, but don't recommend it if you have an engine in it. I also had the frame on wheel dollies so I could slide the frame out once the cab was lifted off.

More pics of the cab lifting brace. The trailer hitch is just a cheap hitch with the ball turned upside down, it slides perfectly into the engine crane arm. Notice the slots cut in the box to keep on the lip on the door opening. I put the hole toward the front of the cab because that is where most of the weight is. If your cab has more weight (seats, gas tank, etc.) you may want to take that into consideration when you drill the hole.

Re: My build thread- 67 C10 SWB

Just bought a driveshaft that fits a 92 Caprice (700r4). Looking at the wheelbase, our swb is 115" and the Caprice is 115.9". Has anybody tried this driveshaft before?

Re: My build thread- 67 C10 SWB

Does the cab handle that lifting device without any bracing? I didn't see if you had any or not.

I'm wanting to lift mine up enough to get some paint on the frame underneath, but I'm worried about the cab warping. Especially since my rockers are rusted out.

I don't think it has warped any. I guess it depends on how much weight you have in the cab (seats, steering column, etc.) and what kind of condition the rest of the cab is in. I didn't have any braces on the cab, but you could put in braces across the doors if you want to take the precaution.

Thanks for the compliments guys!
