Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

Must have came from another source. There are no torx fasteners that small internally.

The roller cammed car TBI's has two torx fasteners holding the cam thrust plate but, not that small.

TBI throttle position sensor for TBI unit is held with torx but, you say it has a Quad on it.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

It's a tbi engine with a carb intake ^ only way that gets in there is through the cam valley in which case it lays there and the screen on the oil pickup won't let it through so it's harmless really. The other way is running through the intake and...through a piston to the oil pan... It would be beaten up to some extent then.

This engine is a roller cam then right? When you take the intake off again pull the lifters and see if anything is amiss

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

Originally it was a tbi motor. So I checked my tbi unit. I didn't find any missing torx bolts. But it pretty much matches one of the bolts that holds the fuel pressure regulator on. So I think we solved the mystery of where's it from. Now how'd it get there is another question.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

Nope not a roller cam, it has the perches but they are not drilled.

The piece I found is just the head and a tiny bit of shaft left. So I don't know if the threaded part is still in there. Or just the head broke off at some point and some how fell into the motor.

Check your flex plate and torque convertor bolts. Also check your bell housing bolts

Nothing yet, had to work all week. I'm planning on getting back to work on the truck tomorrow, if it stops raining.

Back to work on the truck this morning. Haven't found anything new yet. I guess my biggest question right now is. Do you guys think it's worth the time and trouble trying to get this motor going again. Or should I be spending my time prepping my spare engine for a rebuild?

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

I'd run a compression test and tap/wiggle each rod end with the pan off. If it passes compression and no spun bearings, I'd put it back together and try again.

I would be tempted to 2nd that but, that tick/knock noise is steady so something is already damaged. That screw had to enter accidentally through the lifter valley or maybe a valve cover. It may have damaged a lifter/lobe or a rod or main bearing. I would inspect those areas closely before putting it back together. Something has to be damaged to make that loud steady tick.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

well I didn't get much done today. I did get under there and try to wiggly the rods. The only movement I could get from them was a slight forward and back on all of the rods at their lowest point. Not sure if that's a sign of something wrong or not?

Could it be the flywheel? It and the clutch are brand new (well maybe 6 months old). From when I installed the sm465. Wouldn't be the first time I've had a brand new part go bad.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

That bolt head looks like a rocker adjuster for a roller rocker setup.

Have you started the engine since you found the bolt head? If it's already damaged anyway, it's not going to hurt to give it another start with it back together.

The rods will wiggle a small amount anyway, that's normal.

Check your bolts on the flywheel to make sure they didn't come loose. I had that happen before on a flexplate (Mopar's version of a flywheel on an automatic) and it made a loud banging sound near the bottom of the engine. If they're loose, put some loctite 242 on the threads, tighten, and call it a day.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

Hey Charles, what all did you remove the first time around? It almost sounds like something in the bell housing or dust shield area. I have heard noises like that from a dust shield hitting the rear hub of the crankshaft. Try pulling all of your plugs out and spinning the motor over to see if you can hear the noise. Or spin it by hand to see if you can feel the contact and look for something touching. Buddy

85Bowtie: no roller rockers,
Have you started the engine since you found the bolt head? / Nope
The rods will wiggle a small amount anyway, that's normal. / That's good news.

buddy_1: As of today, the intake and carb, valve covers, oil pan, bell housing dust shield, starter, spark plugs, are all removed.
Spinning the engine by hand I didn't hearing anything hitting.

Guess this week if I get any time off, I will work on pulling the trans again. And recheck the bell house and clutch bolts.

Look at the dust shield to see if there is any damage or marking around the center area by the crank/oil pan lip cut out.

Oh and did you take dust shield off the first time before the noise?

If it's loose bolts, you won't. The engine has to be running and subject to vibration/harmonics to exaggerate the sound enough to make it sound like it does. If it was so loose that you could hear it when turning it over by hand you would instantly break something upon startup.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

I'll have to check the dust shield for that tomorrow, but I removed it after the noise, when I pulled the oil pan.

Only thing I changed before the noise started was the intake to replace the gaskets.

Then I would take the oil pump off inspect the shaft ears, pump housing and the blade on the pump drive shaft for damage. With the nylon ring missing the bottom of the shaft could have been sliding out to one side and hitting the pump housing causing the noise.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help

Has anyone considered that maybe something fell into the intake port and is now sitting on top of a piston. The only thing worked on prior to the noise was the intake for a gasket. It would not take much to make such a noise. If you have a bore scope available, pull the plugs and look in each cylinder. Even a piece of gasket could make such a noise.

I got back out there this morning to do some more investigating.

Pic 1: Is that a small crack??
Pic 2: Exhaust is less then 3 months old. Should this already look like this?
Pic 3-4 Oil pump and shaft look fine to me.

Also dust shield doesn't show any signs of damage.

And I don't have a bore scope available. So at this point should I just pull the heads? Since I'm this far in anyways. Might as while add new head gaskets to the list.
