Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
That's what I was calling it, so at least now I know what to ask for when I am looking. Thanks

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
You might post in the 4x4 section on this site. Those guys should be able to tell you if there are other compatible ones that will work. I think 73 was the first year for stock GM front axles with open universals at the hubs.

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
My friend did not want to part with anything. I dug around and found I have 2 spares. I really did not want to part with one either but seeing as I have 2.....I will PM you with the price. It is complete with the cv joint intact. It is dirty and has surface rust but is in solid shape and the cv joint looks good.

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
OrrieG, this is a napco front end only part. The engineer who designed the napco kits is still alive and is a wealth of knowledge. I have talked to him several times with questions on the components.

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
I thought they used a relatively common Spicer front axle with the NAPCO cast into one of the tubes, but turn out could be wrong. Look at this link, I don't like copying copyrighted stuff. It looks like the OP may need to be looking for a Dodge axle for parts.
Read the two or three paragraphs on axles halfway down the page. http://www.napco4x4.org/history3.htm

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
OrrieG, I think the cv components will interchange with some of the dodge cv components ( balls, races) but I believe the axle is different. Not saying you could not take a dodge stub axle and modify it fit. I have never tried the dodge route so I do not know for sure. The napco axle is an interesting animal.

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
Okay guys, I got my new part. My next question is how do I get it in! After looking it over it seems that I need to remove the hub, brakes, backing plate etc.. Am I going to need to take apart the housing that this fits into ? It looks like it comes apart in two pieces or do I just need to tear it down to that point and slide my axle CV joint into it? Should I put the CV joint onto the axle before I slide it in? Looks like you can push the two together with the c clip already on the axle and it will pop out once it is all the way in. Thanks for the help.

Never mind I figured it out. Looks like I need another part and also a seal for the axle shaft?

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
Hey Buggy,
Might be hard to find, I think they are 1958 -59 only. Do you know where there axle seal goes? When I put the axle into the housing it supposed to have a seal. I ordered one from NAPA but I can't really see where it goes? Does it slide onto the axle itself or fit inside the housing? |

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
A couple of days ago I saw a Napco install and Napco shop manual on Ebay. Can't vouch for the level of detail in each.

Re: 1958 4WD 1/2 Ton Questions
I already bought the parts manual and I bought the shop manual yesterday.
I figured it out anyway. Got the new seal in and axle and CV joint . Will get a new brake line tomorrow. I really need a spindle. I can put it back together and make sure everything works but I won't run it in 4WD until I get a new spindle or repair the one I have. Thanks |
