Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
So after some roof raising, I started the task of stripping the roof. The paint was easy, it was the roof tar that was the fun part.
Its now 50% done. I am almost done with the paint stripping.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
As far as the disc brake conversion, look here for some good advice. http://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/...027#Post725027
As far as the rear, if it is an HO72 you can use 14 bolt brake assemblies on it, with a little work. Wheels should be able to swap the later model 19.5 s on to it. I believe all the early 8 lug trucks up to 71 or 72 used 1/2" studs. A simple redrilling will allow the late model and better 9/16" studs.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Finally got the other half of the roof stripped. The outside of the van is virtually stripped with exception of need attention around the rivets.
I started on the inside of the van. Making some head way.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Its really cold up here and I needed something to occupy my time... ha.
This van is going to be bright orange. I put a color chart up and said to my five year old son pick it. Orange it was. I like bright colors... ha.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
A productive day spent with a stripper... Paint stripper that is!
I want to get the body completely paint free and ready to start again. Three different colors to take off.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
So I have been looking at these motor mounts since this van got to my shop.
Someone clearly had a V8 in this rig, but looking at the motor mounts it does not look like a GM to me. Any insight?

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Have no idea on the motor mounts but like the idea of painting it orange ,now what color orange .My 72 truck is being painted Medium Red but looks more orange than red and my 72 El Camino is original Flame Orange and in the sun it really pops but there are a lot of cool orange colors out there.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Pretty sure they only had 3. 4.10, 4.57 and 5.14. If I had to venture a guess, I would say 5.14. The 4.10's normally came in the 3/4 tons. If the rear is in good shape I would leave it in there. If you would want to do disc brakes on the back, the 14 bolt/ Dana 70 dually brackets work. Also pretty sure the early 2000's dually rotors work on that swap too. Depending on what trans you run I might look at a pinion parking brake. As far as the front axle, I would look at either a later P30 complete axle or swapping the spindles out.

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
Thanks for your insight and suggestions. I was hoping to run a 350 and a turbo 350. Any thoughts on this combo?

Re: 1962 Grumman Olson Project
I might look into something a little heavier duty than the turbo 350. And if it does have 5.14's in it, I would look into a 4L80E. 90-93 diesel trucks had a computer that ran the tranny but the engine was mechanical so it should swap into your van rather easily I would think. That is my plans for my 72.

Sorry to bombard you with so many questions, but you have a lot of experience with this stuff, and you work looks great! Do you recommend to primer the frame first before applying the tremclad. if so, do you also use the self etching, or the tremclad primer? Thanks! |
