Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

Number on my 72 gate. As mentioned above most of my sheet metal is stamped. And a stamp on an inner fender as an example.

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

Never took notice of these stamps with all the sheet metal I've stripped and N.O.S. parts I've had. Good to know now that repro has been around a while. I've been able to tell with my naked eye so far,but some parts have gotten very close. The glossier EDP coating is a good give away. In the '80s anything GM sold was original parts (N.O.S.). Repro came later.

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

I have a gate that I bought at a local antiques store that supposedly was taken off in favor a of a drop-in camper when the truck was new. It is immaculate and has the numbers stamped in it as well. It has the woodgrain band and trim. I did not weigh it, but I carried it a couple blocks to the car and it was pretty heavy, 65-70 lbs I would guess. I just recently bought some NOS sheetmetal, I will check it out and see if there are stamped number in the pieces.

I don't see any numbers stamped on anything but i haven't spent a ton of time looking. If the time comes to use it and it fits good, i will be happy. As far as the coatings go, here is my new fender. I am not going to argue if it is new or NOS. It is GM and the finish looks about the same. I have some pieces out of the 70s with the duller finish.

Maybe i should ask the question if this is a GM gate instead of NOS? I could still be convinced either way.

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

A NOS (genuine GM) pass. fender should have the marker light cut-out crooked (at an angle).

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

Maybe the question should be "is this genuine GM?".
I'd guess and say they only stamped metal during production (on the line) 67-72, and not thereafter.
It was probably a way for them to identify the parts during the assembly of the truck, per truck. idk

If your truck pieces have stamps - it'd suggest the pieces are original, from an assembled 67-72 truck.
If no stamps, the piece didn't come from an assembled 67-72 truck and was made sometime after.
I'm strictly speaking of genuine GM pieces only.

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

I think the stamps were part of the manufacturing process. Just weighed mine, 50.8 lbs.

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

The difference in weight could be due to one being painted (Hart_Rod's), and yours only e-coated? I'd guess and say it is genuine GM forged (die-stamped/metal gauge) minus the repro sticker.

Re: N.O.S. gate verification...

Also too_much, it doesn't look like you have the gate's guts in there either. Are these wiehgts somewhat similar, are they empty gates (no guts)? Mine is sitting with primer only, no guts. I could weigh it if I get the chance.

I'd agree, but during the manufacturing back in 67-72 when the pieces were going straight to the plants for assembly.

That could be too, but two latches, the handle and bolts all could add up some. Those latches are hefty little guys.
