Re: Ball joint and spindle spreading much easier

Nice tool, most of my work is now front or all wheel drive now and that won't won't work. If using a hammer on the spindle I find holding a second hammer against the backside very help full. It focuses the impact instead of bouncing the bushings.

Re: Ball joint and spindle spreading much easier

Put your washers between the nut and the center pipe piece. This way when you tighten the nuts, you don't gouge into the end of the pipe.

Re: Ball joint and spindle spreading much easier

Sort of a Rube Goldberg way to do it but whatever works I guess. If you need more force/easier turning you could use fine thread bolts and a dab of grease on the threads and under the washer.

Re: Ball joint and spindle spreading much easier

I used a small bottle jack to get mine off the burb, but I like this idea too. Great write up and pictures BTW! Threads like this are what make this forum so great.

...while we were replying,, again after several months, I noticed those pretty Craftsman wrenches--you just gotta love them! Would you believe I have several(several meaning 2 or more)combination "CRAFTSMAN" wrenches stamped "Made In Japan"? Surely surprised me! But fit/finish looks just the same.

Re: Ball joint and spindle spreading much easier

Used a slightly modified version of this technique this past weekend on the passenger side, and it worked much better than all the pounding it took to free the driver side spindle.

The second bolt is hidden in the socket and pipe; it's keeping them aligned. I removed the upper cotter pin so the socket could fit over the castle nut. Otherwise, the upper tool bolt would start to spin off the upper nut when tightening the lower nut.

That second one is for for the overly cautious, first-time spring removing task. I lowered the jack from behind that tire.
