Re: Air compressor help

I got everything hooked up. Getting juice to the starter box. But nothing on the motor. My pressure switch is ran from L1 to my pressure switch. Then from my pressure switch to the on/off switch, then from the on/off switch to A1. Tell me where I am going wrong?

Re: Air compressor help

Terminal 96 has a wire running from 96 to L3. That is how it was when I got it.

Re: Air compressor help

that starter has a 220v coil to pull in the starter, we need to figure out what else has changed
do you have a multimeter and know how to do basic trouble shooting?
push the red thing sticking out of the lower overload to see if it needs to be reset
if you hear a click try to run the motor

post up couple of pics of the top and bottom of the starter so that i can see what hooks to what
it's difficult to see where the coil wires are and try to post the pics upright to make this easier

right now you have
220v power to L1 and L3
L1 to PS to 3(on/off)4 to A1
and L3 to 96a
where does A2 go? to 96b?

i assume:
that both 96 wires are on the bottom overload
terminals 3 and 4 are on the on/off switch on front of the panel thus the 3(on/off)4 reference above
terminals A1 and A2 are your coil terminals

Re: Air compressor help

I will get some pics for you. You have everything correct. Nothing is put in A2. I think pics will help. Hang right. I'm gonna get the lap top out to post pictures. Right now I hear a buzz at the box when I turn it on, but nothing on the motor. I know it's because a couple wires are wrong.

Re: Air compressor help

no wire on A2.
do you only have 1 wire going to 96 also?
i'm using 96a and 96b for both sides of 96

Correct, no wire on A2. yes 1 wire on 96 running to L3. Im not sure where 96a and 96b are. here are some pics to hopefully help.

Re: Air compressor help

L1: hot wire from breaker and wire running to pressure switch
L3: hot wire, wire from 96, jumper wire from T2
T1: to motor
T2: jump to L3
T3: to motor
A1: goes to -4 on bottom of off/on switch
Pressure switch goes to L1 and -3 top of off/on switch
Correction: 95nc is routed to A2

Re: Air compressor help

Also, I double checked and my wire running from my breaker is 12 gauge, thought it said 10 gauge. So I have a 50 amp breaker and running 12 gauge wire to the starter box.

danger danger danger
i can not in good faith help you until you get the wire and the breaker sized to go together
50 amp breaker with 12 ga wire and a 30+ amp starting load is asking for trouble and possibly a fire that will burn down your house
30 amp breaker with 10 ga wire might work
40 amp breaker with #8 wire is optimal
if you insist on using the 50 amp breaker use #6 wire

i am not trying to be a worrisome wendy here, you have a potential fire hazzard
i will pm you also

Re: Air compressor help

other than my obvious concern in the post above
is this how you currently have the wiring connected?

Re: Air compressor help

i see 2 red wires at your pressure switch that means one red wire should be hooked to 96 and i see 2 black wires on 96
and i see 3 wires hooked to the on/off switch, should be 2; one red from pressure switch and one to A1
i also see 3 wires hooked to L3, also you have a black wire in T2; is this the dotted jumper?

you said the starter is humming, this means the starter is pulled in
did you push the reset? the reset is on the overload with the round red thing.

on the cover diagram it has two 96 contact on the overload
from your post i gather it is 95nc and 96nc?

Thank you for your concern. I will get this fixed ASAP before doing anything else. My red wire going to my pressure switch is in the L1 slot with my hot wire coming into L1. Then the only other thing is A2 is routed to 95NC. What gauge wire should be run inside of the starter switch? 10 gauge going to the motor. There is also 16 gauge inside the box.

Right now no red wire is hooked to 96. 96 has a black wire going to L3. 96 only has one black wire, just looks like 2. On the on/off switch it has a red one on -3 and a black one going to A1 coming from -4 on the on/off switch. There is no 96 A and B. Just 96nc and 95nc.

Re: Air compressor help

your old 3ph motor ran at 12 amps, the new 1ph motor runs at twice that. 10 ga is probably fine
the 16 ga should just be for controls, maybe less than .5 amp to pull the relay in.

what voltage is your coil? i can't quite see it in the pic. there are 2 common 3ph voltages; 240 and 480

i misspoke on the red wires. one goes to L1 and one to the on/off switch and that is what i see
did you push the reset?

Re: Air compressor help

It's a 480 coil. And yes I did push the reset. No luck. You are correct on the red wires. They are hooked up correctly.

Re: Air compressor help

So I have to get a 220 volt coil? If so I will probably just get a new single phase starter switch, make things much easier for me. Breaker box and compressor are 5 feet apart.

Re: Air compressor help

your existing pressure switch is only rated at 3 hp so it won't work as a stand alone switch
a new coil will be the easiest and cheapest fix for your compressor

i tried to google a 240 coil for that starter and came up with nothing
i did find a new starter at tier1automation.com that is a direct replacement for $30
i have never dealt with them and can't vouch for the company
a replacement will fit right in the box and use the same overload
they may be able to sell you a new 240v coil also

or you could buy the one you posted, it will need to be wired the same as what you have with an on/off switch through the pressure switch
either way you will need to update your wiring and breaker to match the motor
if you need help with that send me a pm

i gave it my best shot, never thought to look at the coil voltage

Re: Air compressor help

Ogre you have been extremely helpful and I truly appreciate your honest concern. I will get the breaker and wire updated tomorrow. I will probably go the cheaper route and get the new 240 starter you posted the link to. Might check eBay. Keep an eye on this thread and I will try to keep you updated on the progress. This is my first time I have messed with anything 3 phase. Once I get this thing running I will let you know. I will PM you with anymore questions. Thanks again. People like you make this the greatest site.

Re: Air compressor help

I went ahead and bought the whole contactor you listed above for $30. I ordered it today. Hopefully have it by Friday, from tier1. I searched high and low for a coil. Couldn't find it. I will keep watching and updating this thread until I get it running. I bought a 40 amp breaker today and also got some 8 gauge wire. Just waiting on my contactor.
