I agree with leddzepp. Have you noticed the buyers are middle aged or older? They are trying to "buy" back their youth or invest in an appreciating collector car market. One group of guys are buying with the heart while the other group are buying instead of investing in the stock market or a CD earning 1% interest.

Another thing that some Auctions do is pump pure oxygen into the buyer's arena. This gives the buyers a "happy" buzz so they bid higher and stay longer at the auction. Gambling Casinos do the same thing. Mix pure H2O with unlimited alcohol and you have people gladly opening that wallet.

I enjoy going to auctions. Sometimes I'm buying, sometimes I'm selling, and sometimes, just watching other people. It's cheap entertainment, and if you know what things are worth and don't get caught up in a bidding war, you can walk away with some good deals.

As for what it's worth? I'll have to agree with others that we'll know when it's sold. I've seen people pay more than what they can afford on stuff they don't need and have seen a millionaire in Harbor Freight trying to combine his coupons to get the most of his $3 purchase.

and its all good if everyones happy. Ive bought & sold lots of things from real estate, horses & livestock ect. but mostly its been truck , cars & parts. Its a necessity or me to purchase at a bargain. The profit for me is made in the purchase not in the sale. . I need to buy at a low enough price that who ever I sell to also buys at less than full value. I want my buyer to be able to make a good profit. That way he returns with more of his money. It takes a certain amount of skill to become a trader and even more skill to be able to trade with a trader. Ive sold a lot on craigs list. Ive sold a lot at those yearly FFA type auctions you see in the spring & fall. At Those auctions there is not a buyer fee. no consignment fee,s and if it don't sell you don't owe a dime. However if I take something to a sale I let it go no matter what. Ill let the item sell at a loss because I figure it brought all that it was worth at that time & place. The auctioneer and staff aren't apprasers and need the items to sell and I don't want someone working for nothing. When it comes down to it, if you have a reserve it really isn't a auction. A actual auction in my opinion is when something absoultly sells to the best bidder for cash at the appointed time & place No if,s and,s or buts of funny stuff. A month ago I took a Billy goat to the goat auction a Koskoknog Mo. I thought ole billy should bring $150.oo . however on that day there where plenty more than the usual number of billy goats for sale. Ole billy sold for $80 and I had $120 invested in him. I could have not sold him. However I don't think Thats fair & honest. The buyer simply got a real bargain. and I lost a few dollars.

saw this after my last post - gotta chip in 2 cents on this one - if Viagra and "low T medicine" hadn't been invented, that would destroy Mecum's market.

Seriously, though, if prices for our trucks really are appreciating, that's good news for all of us. Though I don't look at either of my trucks as investments. If I were investing in classic cars, I'd not be buying this category.

And It apparently sold for the 11K. The value of something is real simple it,s whatever price a seller & buyer agree on. A appraised value is quite another thing. Rarely are the appraised value and the actual selling price the same.

You have to consider the fact that many "buyers" have NO mechanical knowledge No time No equipment/tools or just NO interest in the process to build a nice truck for themselves , Many aren't as "educated" as the members in here on real value or desirable models/options and are more interested in creature comforts and late model technology than a stock restoration . If you really want the most money for your truck with no A/C don't try to sell it in Florida or your drum brake 6cyl in mountain country ,With Ebay and Craigslist being basically cheap or free you can advertise anywhere in the US and find more than a few "buyers" for what you have to sell .The big name auctions aren't ment for "nice driver trucks " show up with something special or Perfect and you will get crazy bids from the entitled immediate gratification crowd ! They will have it shipped home (they don't own trailers) and it will sit in their climate controlled garage under a cover until a perfect weather tailgate party day arrives ! And they will continue to raise the value of all our trucks ,Buy as many as you can store it's better interest than any bank pays !

Surprized nobody mentioned it, but the truck has a 68-70 grill with a stripe painted on it to kind of look like a 71-72 grill. It's a strange detail.

I was at Mecum this year and saw quite a few trucks. I think I'll start my own thread to post some pictures. For those that are interested keep your eyes open. I don't want to get into the Mecum auction debate here. I had a blast and my friend was able to sell his 1934 Buick street rod.
