My 68 396 has the red cam also. I've owned it since 1980. Did you contact Cliff Ruggles yet? www.Cliffshighperformance.com
He is the Q-Jet answer man.
I've seen old carbs with broken red plastic arms on them. Might not be easy to find a good one.
My carb is buried somewhere in my garage. If I remember correctly, the cam was not in great shape when I disassembled the engine...
