1981 is the only year the Olds 5.7 diesel was in an 81-87 style truck from the factory. I've never even seen a living example.

There is 1 year only tow hooks on the 81. They are shaped like the 82 up, but beefy like the 73-80.

We load a lot of trucks at my place of employment and I pay close attention to any 73-87 squarebody that rolls in. There is a regular customer that drives a 81 long bed that has a gas v8 in it, but the fender emblem says diesel. The truck is in real good condition. Two tone red and burgundy with a red interior. Ill try to take a pic next time he stops by.

Yep!!!! 91' first and only year for VSS NP205 as stated. Actually first and only year for electronic speedo in a crew cab. The 241 was NOT available in a crew cab, only burbs n blazers.

"To answer your earlier question: no TBIs on fullsize trucks in '85. We've had this discussion before and I can answer with confidence, because I 've had conversation with the GM Powertrain guys who did the calibrations for these TBI engines. They have said no TBIs until 1987 model year."

My neighbor has an '83 I believe it is. Used to be the 6.2 diesel but that crapped out. It was very popular to change over to gas Olds 350 because the bell housing of the 6.2 was the BOP pattern (Buick, Olds, Pontiac ((and Cadillac))). Fender still says diesel, but it's indeed gas. I've always wanted to find one with a crapped out 6.2 and throw a Caddy 500 in there with MTS heads/etc.

I believe you're thinking of the Olds 5.7 liter diesel, offered through 1981. It had the BOP bellhousing pattern, most people swapped them out with the Olds 350 or 455. The 6.2 is a totally different beast and I believe it used the conventional Chevrolet bellhousing pattern.

I worked at a trans shop about 10 years ago and an '81 Suburban came in with that goofy ass diesel in it. Engine ran surprisingly well. It's the only one I've ever seen in person.

Probably stupid, but I believe '75 had a one year only fan shroud for the sbc. At least I assume so since no one repops them and nobody seems to know anything about them.

What year did they start the 400 engine?
I have seen 400 grill emblems and thought they started in '76 or 77?

Hello everyone, I believe 1981 was the first and last year to have the newly designed, squarish center console with the bucket seats. I do not see the bucket seat option in pick ups after 1981 in any of my literature.

The 400 was introduced in 1970 and it was optional in 4WD trucks only 1973 - 1980.
