Re: I am buying a truck and I am going to be transporting in about 400 miles

Make sure plug wires are routed out of the way and also fuel lines. If you have a old plug wire in the shop may not be a bad idea. Lots o zip ties. And I love vise grips. Several sizes. Last year I drove my truck from ky to the Mississippi gulf coast. My advantage was I could gather my suplies before I left. Good luck.

Just curious, I see you have Dallas listed as your home town, where are you going to get the truck at and what are The stats on the truck.

I would also consider either changing the fuel pump before you start home as mentioned or at least have a replacement along with you. Just be sure it is the right one by comparing it to the current one installed. Would keep from having an unexpected surprise if the old one fails half way home.

You will be close to CN border. My first concern would be some warm clothing. I can see this being a fun trip..

Do you plan to fly into the local airport? Or will Great Falls be the airport of choice?

You might want to post your route and general timeline. There are sure to be board members along the way that would be willing to help out if need be.

Re: I am buying a truck and I am going to be transporting in about 400 miles

Have you ever up this far North this time of year? I read your post about changing Oil, etc. in O'Riellys parking lot and that probably won't be very feasible in December in Northern Montana. Looking at the map when you leave Malta and head for Billings Montana that is 200 miles of stark desolate lonely country and the weather can get nasty real quick there. After Billings you are on the Interstates so help would be quick if you needed it. I know the shippers charge more to come up near the Canadian Border because they usually cant get a load back but my advice for this time of year is to pay the extra and have her shipped right from Malta. If you work with a shipper and are not in hurry they may cut you a better rate.

I know I was one of the ones in favor of you driving but I thought you might be down here somewhere, is there salt on the roads up there yet?
Maybe Already Gone has a point? If those roads are salty I wouldn't drive it the 400 miles due to rust issues alone.

Re: I am buying a truck and I am going to be transporting in about 400 miles

I drove my K10 400 miles first thing - the weekend I happened to have free to go pick it up, it was highs of about 10*, lows well below zero, and snowing. Had to stop at a hotel overnight, was extremely happy when the truck started right up in the morning. Drove it over Wolf Creek Pass in a whiteout with bald rear tires, steering so loose as to be simply suggestive, and, as I found out later, no rear brakes.

Had I known about all that beforehand I might have taken a truck and trailer instead of having my wife follow me in a separate car... all's well that ends well, I guess.

Moral of my story is, make sure the thing is safe to drive first!

Re: I am buying a truck and I am going to be transporting in about 400 miles

Made a trip from Nebraska to Maryland in a '69 GMC Custom Camper years ago that I had bought off of Ebay. I had the time of my life, took my brother in law with me. That truck was an old farm truck with a massive camper on it. No rear brakes installed at all. Bought all the parts I needed to fix brakes, carried a spare alternator and fuel pump. Truck scared me a first as it sounded like the engine was screaming at 60 MPH, but it ran like a top and didn't burn a drop of oil. Had to replace a fuel pump on the side of the road on the West side of St. Louis, but that was the only failure we had. Great memories and a great truck.

Best things to have for a road trip like this...
a PAID account with AAA
a good usable credit card.
