WOW, these pictures took me back to a memory as a child that I had completely forgotten until now. It must have been around the time that Helms went out of business because I couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 years old. I remember this truck in my neighborhood and seeing donuts in these wood drawers.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

I got my Logos put on today. I am really happy with the way they turned out. 2 of them are perfect, and the third you have to get really close to before it looks slightly off. Thanks again Jimmy!

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

Great thread and I love the pics. I'm trying to find some logos and PR pics ofy uncles cafe in Blakesburgh Iowa to put on my suburban. Only problem I have is that no one has any pics and I've even called the C of C and they don't have anything.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

Thanks Jimmy! I used the wet method on the first 2. The rear was first, and it was a bit of a trick to get the backing off. The second was the passenger side. That one was tough. Ended up having to slice the backing a bit and take it off 1 letter at a time. Drivers side was the dry method, and it went really quick and easy.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

You're going to asked for doughnuts a lot blown240! Looks great. I'll bet you could make a fortune if you set up a portable fryer in the back & sold them.

When you get a chance, could you please let me know approx. how wide your windshield trim is? I think I bought the narrower 62-63 trim and not the wider 60-61 trim before I knew there was a difference.

WOW,...so this really existed? I never knew or heard about Helms.
Here in our town, Panels weren't too popular that I can remember.
Those are some cool pics.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

Thanks much blown240. You verified I bought the wrong trim. Looks like your correct 60 - 61 is about an inch wide and my 62 - 63 trim is 1/2" wide.

The 62-63 trim will work on any 60-63 windshield as will the 60-61, I prefer the wider trim myself and have it for both my 63's.....I think it stands out a bit more since its twice as wide.

Make sure to get the 4 revel clips either way....they are hard to find alone for either set. And I'd recommend a Precision gasket for the easiest installment. Have heard a lot of issues with other brands.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

So I've had the helms logos on my truck for a few weeks now, and I can't go anywhere without someone mentioning it. It's pretty cool to hear all the old stories.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

So I just talked to my mom about this post and she said that she remembers the helms trucks back in the day. My mom is from Glendale and she asked if I knew why they went out of business. I said I had no clue. her reply was " Because to many women where getting "bread" in the streets." I thought that was pretty bad.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

A good buddy of mine was a bread man. Not Helms, but a bread man none the less. He said that Helms demise was that they didn't want to get into the big supermarkets that started popping up in the late 60s.

If I had the extra room, money and time, I would really consider it. I was surprised to see all the shelving still in tact.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

When I was at the last Pomona Swap I heard someone blowing the old Helms whistle. It instantly brought me back to my 5th grade classroom where I had a desk by the window where I could see the panel drive by. The guy was pretty regular and when the kids would hear the whistle they would get all crazy because that meant recess was only a few minutes away. It was so bad the teacher would actually give up on any lessons as soon as it would blow. She would get really mad if he came earlier as us kids would just go glass eyed and start getting ready for break.

A few years later I heard her say she was soooo happy they were going out of business.

Re: Anyone else have a Helms Bakery truck?

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd resurrect and share my completed project. Spent 1.5 years on a frame off plus the interior build out. For those of you 60 or over and grew up in SoCal, no explanation is required. Those that didn't, Helms bakery used panel trucks to deliver all over SoCal from 1930 thru end of the 1960s.
