Re: 49 AD Build - Bed and Running gear Swap plus...
Pulled the motor/trans, finished the welds, cleaned up the frame, did some POR-15 application & put the motor trans back in. Time to do some work on the bed. Did a mock-up with the new bed sides & cross pieces. Just little different putting 1/2 ton sides on a cut down 3/4 ton frame - mostly to do with mounting & center cross pieces. We changed the locations somewhat from stock.
The Mar-k sides and part are great - everything is spot on. We're really happy with the fit. We're going to do some mods to the rear cross member so are spare can go underneath - then the bed parts go off to the paint shop. Really happy with the way this has been coming along. The guy/shop doing the work has everything it takes - I just add some extra hands, parts scrounging & some brainstorming. Been about a year & a half now & a very pleasant process.... |

Re: 49 AD Build - Bed and Running gear Swap plus...
Thank you all for the positive comments - I am big on the "sleeper" thing...
I've been though all your threads end to end more than once (before I started this thread) - they are all very innovative & inspiring. I have to admit to being a bit jealous, though... ...I have a wood floor barn, with a chain fall & my welding gear from my body - working days. However, as a former volunteer fireman in a rural community, I have learned not throw sparks around in a 19th century barn - what I would give for a concrete floor/heated space! In any case, I really do need the help/expertise I get (and by myself, it would also go a lot slower..), but it would be nice to be able to do a little bit more at home. ...so, now & then I mock some things up in the barn and then trundle them over to the "real" shop. |

Build is looking good! I love the old barns though they are getting scarce around here now.

Re: 49 AD Build - Bed and Running gear Swap plus...
Belt & pulley business is sorted out. Alan Grove alternator bracket plus fan and crank pulleys. Bracket & pulley for the PS is Borgeson - required some very slight adj. Didn't know about AG at the time or I would have got the bracket/pulley from them.
When AC goes on in the future, will add a third groove to the crank (from AG) and move the PS belt to the outside. AC uses the middle groove, which seem to be a common way to set these up. AG were a great help with solutions, fast shipping & good tech info on their site. |

Re: 49 AD Build - Bed and Running gear Swap plus...
Haven't posted in a bit, but have been busy. Engine is all together & fired it up for the first time last week. Five minutes of some simple adjustments and on the third start up it settled into a nice idle.
Test fit (loose) the nose & cooling system stuff - that's about all that's needed under the hood. Clutch, throttle linkage, & driveshaft to do. Did a final test fit on the bed & took it off yesterday - now at the paint shop. Lotsa details , but hope to be done in 4-5 weeks... |

Re: 49 AD Build - Bed and Running gear Swap plus...
Everything is back from the paint shop & we did some assembly - Mar-k stuff is tops!
Worked out a spare tire carrier which required some modest mods to the 3/4 ton frame. I like having the extra weight in back - no need now for that bedside spare tire carrier I bought. Re-set the buper & welded up a bunch of old holes. Next: Driveshaft, exhaust, radiator hookup, clutch & throttle linkage. Hoping to make a local show on July 18.... |

Re: 49 AD Build - Bed and Running gear Swap plus...
Hoping to make it to the finish line...
Got the spare tire mount fabricated and in, then the bed mounted and most of the wood secured (oak from Mar-k, 5 coat of Minwax spar varnish over the winter). Trans is all secured. Have to change the master cyl on the clutch out once more to a larger one. Modified and fabricated the throttle linkage to work with the stock gas pedal (thanks to Mike, the shop owner...well, thank to Mike for everything, actually...) After looking at Lokar pedal stuff and not liking it, I asked a buddy of the shop owner if he had any 60's GM stuff in his personal boneyard... what I got was the gas pedal linkage out of a 65 Chevy. Mike did his fab magic & with a Lokar cable we now have a pull linkage using the old gas pedal. We are working hard and I figure we have an even chance of making it to our local show ... The antique car show at Yankee Candle in South Deerfield MA on 7/18/2015 (rain date is 7/19/2015) Hope to see someone from the forum there.
