It's your truck: do with it what you will.

That said, I personally go with stock or close to it (mods made with factory stuff from the same period. In so far as possible, my truck will have almost all parts from the same era, even though some of the parts installed on it at the factory were beyond salvage. The engine is another '69. The T-case is another Rockwell T-221. The bed is a step, rather than a fleet, but it's a '69 bed. Even the a/c compressor I'm going to use as a simple air compressor is a period York. The only exceptions are the carb/intake combo (which may yet revert to original) and the HEI (which may revert, too, if it keeps failing on me), and maybe a set of 2" lift springs. Because of its harsh life, my truck would never be a candidate for a Concourse Restoration, but it will be largely period correct, and no non-period mods will be irreversible.

I don't LIKE new vehicles, which is why I drive one that's 34 years old, and I don't want to impose new characteristics on it.

Of course, my opinion and $.59 will get you a cup of coffee at Hardees.

LOL thats how I pulled the motor out of my friend's motorcyle...

Anyway, I wouldn't be doing anything that could not be changed back. No serious modifications to the engine, maybe just a cam, intake and carb.

The interior would be kept mostly stock except I want carpet instead of rubber matting, a newer style seat(I would make brackets so no new holes would need to be drilled), a smaller steering wheel, and carpet over the gas tank instead of cardboard. All this is reversible.

One more thing, I want a CD player but do not want to cut the dash. I am having a custom center console built that will sit where the shifter would be on a 4-speed. I will put the CD player in there and I am even thinking about one of those little 7" wide TVs you can buy at Best Buy.

I will keep all original pieces. This is the way I think I am going to go with the truck. All your comments have really helped me decide. Now, to keep or not to keep the original color...

Scott

Back in the day, all original was worth more because modifications were done usually by the owner which the quality was questionable, but now its not the case anymore with the availability and quality of aftermarket parts. Build it for you, not anyone else.

i Dont think you should even worry about what would be worth more. Very few can build a truck and sell it for more than they have it... hell, even close to what they have in it would be good most people would lose their ass... so dont even worry about it.
if you are looking for an investment. Buy a stock or bonds lol not a truck.

the old custom or original argument. lol, another waste of time. its like arguing what color is better.. Its all a matter of taste. Some (like me) love the classic old look. connection with the past etc. others.. like some of the freaks above hahahah, like having one of a kind trucks with all kinds of cool mods... whats better? only depends on who you ask.

Harley's are another deal just like this. The popular view right now is the West coast chopper, occ, stretched, fat tire wild crap bikes.... to me i think they are crap, ugly, uncomfortable, not worthy of riding on a trip.. ect..nothing but flashy look at me crap. imho!

Others see a restored 65 pan head or a new factory road king and yawn.. I see beautiful history, classy bike. and a very functional comfortable touring bike....

Boils down to what you want.. screw everyone else!

Less filling! Tastes great!!!!!

It's your truck, if you are gonna keep it make it your kind of truck . If you are just gonna sell it make it a truck that fit's what you like but can easily change to fit someone else's want's.

I bought my truck bone stock. It had daul exhaust and rally wheels.Other than that the motor was stock right down to the points distrubitor. It still had the orginal three on the tree.

At first I drove it all stock. Then the two barrel carb went south.I weighed my options and decided to get a new edelbrock 600cfm.For two reasons. For one the truck was so slow it was boring. Two I could probably get better gas milage for the 4 barrel because of the smaller primary's anyway.Since I was going from a two barrel to a 4 I had to get a new intake. So I got a performer RPM.One of my buddies grinded the edelbrock off and painted it orange. It looks pretty factory. After I got the intake realized he didn't have a performer RPM.Plus that new intake was so shiney. So I get the truck apart.I have a brand new comps cam cam and lifters along with their couble roller timing chain set sitting in another motor that has never been fired. So I took that cam out and put it in the factory 307..(I had been told it was a 350)So anyway I get it all back togother and it wont run worth a darn.I thought it was the dang points distrubitor so when my buddy offered me a good HEI with an accel coil for 20 bucks I couldn't resist. So That went in.It ended up being I had installed the cam out of wack.(my first cam swap and listening to some not so smart people)So Now my truck had an intake, carb, cam, and an HEI.I also installed a sun supertach.I hose clamped it to the steering column making myself fell better about another modifcation by telling myself it was alright because they did that along time ago.For some reason this truck makes me feel like I am my dad.It is hard to explain.MY dad past away. And he always used to tell me stories about how he used to have hotrods when he was a kid.I wanted to get something that maybe he would have had.I knew one of his dreams truck was a 69 short bed 3/4ton 4wd.The closest thing I could find or afford was a 69 lwb c-10.Not exactly but oh well.

Do I regret it?Heck no.Listening to that cam lope made my blood run.Being able to break them lose at 35mph was an awesome feeling.Guess what now I was biten by the speed bug.So I kept tuning it and tuning it.Till one day I was racing a new dodge truck and my clutch disk exploded. What to do now?Sure a new clutch was in order. Why not throw that 350 in the garage in it.Along with some headers. So a new lunati cam and lifters set along with a new double roller timing chain was installed. Some heads with bigger valves,a high volume oil pump,And a set of hedman headers. So the new 350 and clutch was installed. So now my truck didn't even have the original motor in it.Which I tottally intended on keeping it in there.(turns out it is a 307 the p/o told me it was a 350.)

Anyway 4 days later the 350 spins a main bearing. The problem was though that 350 made that truck pretty fast.It would now get a third gear scratch at 55mph.

Since then I have weighed my options.I am going to rebuilt this 350 fairly stock and keep the three on the tree. And work on the body keeping it semi original while still being mine.I instead going to get an s-10 and putt a 408 small block in it.Who cares if I make an s-10 not original.

I didn't mean to write that much.opps!

Stock vs Custom

As the saying goes, opinions are like a viable bodily orifice everybody has one, so here's mine. Everything I've built has been stock, and mine's about to undergo a transformation.

I will keep the stock appearance (pics to follow soon), but from there I'm going to dress it up a bit, but keep the stock body. That sets ours apart. So far mine has about everything on it except a DeSoto part anyway (soon to be incorporated because of principle), so go for what looks good to you. I won't agree that "stock sucks", but there is room for improvement in the original design. TFrog

i think the coolest thing going right now is the FADrags, these are cars that appear stock but have all hidden modifications. they even race them on poly-glas tires.
i agree with CPNE on some accounts, if a truck is all intact, never been touched, rare, or highly optioned it should be kept stock.
if you want to add your own touches to a truck find something thats borderline scrap pile. id rather see crappy custom trucks than junk trucks.
