Re: New Guy In Arizona
So swap meet thing aside, Here are a few of the things I was thinking of taking off the other truck. I'm not sure what I'm going to do so these things are just bouncing a few ideas off the wall.
The 71 does not have a grill. When I saw the price of the grill and grill insert I was blown away for what they want for a piece of stamped tin. I figure I have all the sheet metal including the grill for the 70 so why not swap all of it over. *Somebody* swaped in 5 lug disc brakes with lowering spindles. I am guessing they had to have come fromy a 71 or 72 but is it possible they came from a 73 on? If the spindles are correct for 71 and 72 I'm going to use them because I'm guessing 73 on I would have to take more than the spindles. The power steering is a no brainer. I have never seen a good deal price-wise (I'm cheap) on a new "grill surround"; I paid 125$ for a used one 18 years ago. Here's a used one on craigslist that if I needed one, I'd probably buy this one (not mine). You might offer him less and see what happens, I never pay asking price on craigslist. Notice on the ad that it includes R and L mounting brackets and center brace, IMO that's a good deal even better if you need those mounts (the mounts are pricey new or used). http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/pts/4897967690.html Or a "not perfect" one for 30$ (those are easy to straighten and brush polish). http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/pts/4888805725.html I'd try to get the "not perfect" one and see if you think you can straighten it. Then, wait for a deal on a repop plastic center. The inserts look nice painted flat black, easy to do on a new one just don't touch it after you take it out of the box. Depending on the color of your truck, it would be interesting to see someone paint them the color of the truck. Mine looks great black because the truck is white. They sell Chinese re-pops on craigslist from time to time reasonably priced, you have to keep an eye out for them (it's how I got mine for about 75$). I would not bother with a used grill insert unless it was 25$ or less with no cracks or breaks. Then turn around and sell the 70 stuff at a swap meet or craigslist to maybe recoup some of the expenditure. |

Thanks mechanicalman! They swapped the rear axel out to a 5 lug, the 6 lug was still in the bed of the truck when I got it.

"1971 was the first year for AM/FM radios factory installed. Finally, the front brakes on all light-duty trucks were switched from drum brakes to disc brakes, resulting in much less brake fade under heavy use. While many prior C/K half-ton trucks had used a six-lug bolt pattern (6 x 5.5") for the wheels, two-wheel-drive models switched to a five-lug pattern (5 x 5–inch bolt circle) common to Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac passenger cars. The 1/2 ton 4 x 4 retained the 6 lug bolt pattern". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_C/K That truck should have already been 5 lug with disc brakes. Are you sure those are dropped spindles, not lowering springs? If it has original paint, there may be some semblance of the disc brake decal on the tailgate. |

Re: New Guy In Arizona
I was talking about the second truck, the 70 short bed. The long bed is a 71 it came with disc and 5 lug. The 70 somebody swapped in 5 lug front and rear and put disc up front. The original 6 lug rear axel were sitting in the bed of the 70 when I bought it.

OK. If the 70 front engine cross-member appears to have some bolts from the cross-member to the frame that either have never been installed or have had to have the holes elongated, it may be 73 and up cross-member, 73 and up has 62.7" track width (I've heard it's wider than 71-72). I cannot confirm 71-71 front track width at this time, but I have a 73 up and a 72 but don't know when I will have all those measurements. HERE'S A LINK I KNOW YOU WILL LIKE http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...68&postcount=4 Another with useful info http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=367260 OK man here's the info on the swap meets: http://www.justsellitautomotiveswapmeet.com/ We need to get together and see who has a nice flatbed trailer (that guy gets in for free) so we all load up a proportionate amount of stuff to sell and split the costs of the space. We take turns watching the store and cruising the meet. Or we could just go to a meet then decide later if we want to rent a spot at the next one, as you can see they have a lot of dates. I'm sending you a PM with my e-mail address so we can coordinate a get-together. My wife loves to get me out of the house on the weekends! Don't know what's going on there, always beer missing when I get home....LOL |

Re: New Guy In Arizona
I loved that car. Been my daily driver for 7 years. Never let me down but getting parts was tough at times. I think the other guys insurance is calling it a total loss. Bummed, I was going to give it to my daughter when she turns 16 because my dad gave it to me when I was about 25.
