Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Today welded the right floor pan in.

First photo shows the extra reinforcement brace I added.

Drilled the holes and sprayed weld thru primer.

Placed the floor pan and measured twice....

Floor pan welded in.

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Next big step for me is to fix the rocker panel, inner cowl panel and lower front pillar.

First made some braces and then cut the pieces out.

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Nice work on the floor!!
Do you have to do both sides, the lower section I mean?

And what a clean workspace you have

Kees, Yes I have to do both sides.
Left rocker is in, left cab floor support also.

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Oldman 3 (Jim), Advanced Design and Sim6, thanks for your replies.

Today I tried to test fit the inner and outer cowl, mentioned that the inner cowl panel is not as nicely curved as the outer (new) cowl panel and (old) fender.

As I have cut the inner cowl out, my reference is gone, do you have any tips how to proceed? (Cab is off the frame)

I think follow the curves of the (old) fender is the best way to do it?

That means to cut the inner panel to fit the fender, I thought, I have seen people here do it...
Please advise

Yes, that is the way that I did it. If you can set up a box or a stand so you can actually mount the fender to the cab with the outer cowl clamped up, that will give you a good reference.

Thanks, I will search your build threat.

This means a lot of measuring and trying before final welding.

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Today removed the lead, seam between upper and lower cowl panel, it went out easily.
To get the cowl panel out is a real struggle, will try to trim the new panel tomorrow.

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Today had a real struggle with the inner cowl panel, seems it wont fit at all,
as mentioned before I have/had to trim the curve off the panel.
Most off the trimming on the top of the panel.

It is ready to weld in, hopefully the outer cowl will fit.

Cleaned and sprayed the inside with Brunox Epoxy primer.

Inner panel is welded in, setup the fender to see the lines are correct.
I have trim it a little bit.'

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Richard,

Nice looking work so far! You are really doing some nice work! I appreciate the pictures of the back of your firewall, and how you mounted your heater. Thanks for the idea! I purchased some strut channel last week, and plan on welding that to the back of mine. That way I can buy and mount my heater/air at a latter date, and not have to mess up my firewall. I have my rear bed metal to buy first, before spending money on the accessories.

I loved the bright yellow color by the way. I cried when you put Old Yeller down!
What color are you planning on going with this time?

Hi Tikal48, thanks for your reply,

You are right about the 'brackets' welded on the firewall, that is the whole idea behind it.
I wanted a clean firewall, as there always would be mounting spots missing during the build.....

I will be using new chrome bumpers and grille, so looking for a color matching the chrome.

These colors are on my wish list.

GM Corvette electron blue
GM HHR sunburst orange

Richard

Good choices on the colors. I think either would look good.
I will definitely be following your build. Keep up the good work!

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Hi Tikal48,

Thanks, to choose the right color is difficult.

Yesterday made some progress on the RH side, Lead is out and welds are drilled out,
inner to outer panel is out, next job is to weld the rocker panel in....

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Richard,

Looks like those gaps came out pretty good! I ended up going through about three go-rounds on the driver's side to get my fender to fit reasonably well.

The gaps on the outside seems to be oke, but I still have a problem like yours.
I also have to add appr. 3/8'' to inner cowl panel, as you did.
To be sure I will fix this later when the cab is back on the frame.

RH inner cowl panel is out, and welded rocker panel in.

New inner cow panel trimmed at the top, did this also at LH.

Re: 1949 AD truck 'Chevy-49'

Rocker panel and front lower pillar are in, now busy with a very time consuming thing to do....

Trimming and welding the inner panel to fit the inner and out cowl panel.
