Don't mean to highjack the conversation, but I'd like to think that in a legit instance such as this that a new title/ID plate could be issued by the DMV or Rosette rivets could be legally obtained for this situation, especially a legit body shop. I'm thinking the shop probably has this covered.

I made the silly mistake of removing my ID plate in 1986 for a paint job, fortunately the man painting it was a manager of a big body shop and he was able to get the right rivets to put it back on. After he read me the riot act.

You know that's tweaked PG? But, I have to consider I have been warned LOL.

I thought I understood what I think you said, but I'm not sure I realize that what I heard is not what you meant.

IMO (JUST an opinion, everbody has one), you should be able to replace your cab, all except the area of the pillar post that has the ID tag. Cut out the area, and weld it into the replacement cab and you are good to go, no rivets necessary. I won't tell anyone if you won't.

You simply had to replace MOST of it, not ALL of it. It WOULD be nice to have EITHER a title stashed away for the replacement cab with the ID tag off it in your strongbox or a bill of sale from a legit salvage yard. Again, just opinion. Laws vary state to state.

Re: Real big ouch !

Here in PA that VIN tag means nothing. When I registered my truck all I needed was a scratching (piece of paper on top of the tag rubbed with a pencil) of it. For all they know i could've stayed the VIN into a piece of tin and scratched it.

Re: Real big ouch !

Maine and New Hampshire do not need titles for vehicles over 25 years old. I just registered my 65 Buick and all I had to do was have a dealer, inspection station, or police officer sign a form verifying that was the vin number. I went to the town office and registered with no problem.
