Re: 72 K10 4x4 with replacement rear axle-Dana 60??

I stand corrected KWMech. I had bought 11" and they were too small so I thought they were 13". Come to find out they are actually 12" brakes. Sorry for the bad info. Thanks for pointing it out.

Re: 72 K10 4x4 with replacement rear axle-Dana 60??

I've got the Dana Application Guide.

Your axle came in a 1971 K25 Truck Chassis with 4.10 and a standard differential.

Would you mind measuring the distance between the bolt holes on the spring perches for me? You can just measure from the edge of the springs (outside on one to inside on the other) as close to the differential cover as possible.

I'm trying to find a Dana 60 rear for my 70 k20 but the ones I've found so far have 42" between springs and my truck with the HO52 has 40". Not sure if it's a 4wd vs 2wd thing or what?

I just bought a Dana 60 out of a 1971 Longhorn, spring perches measure 40 inches center to center...

TJ,

Will get the measurement for you too, it maybe a day or so, truck is in storage.

Thanks for identifying its origin, it all looks stock, no re welding of Spring perches or shocks. Looks like a bolt-in.

The Dana 60 in truck has 40" in centerline rear springs.
Thanks for the information above.

Thanks for measuring that. If you run across another 40" Dana 60 let me know. I need one.

Re: 72 K10 4x4 with replacement rear axle-Dana 60??

Sorry I don't. Should have saved all that info. When I got my parts they gave me the wrong stuff. Young manager who only knew how to use computer. I came back in with my shoes to assure getting the right parts, as us older guys have always done, and he was flustered from the get go. He didn't seem to listen to my input, trying to work it out himself. I told him the drum had 12.125" MAX stamped in it, so I assume they are 12" brakes. I had to pop that in a few times as he searched his computer before he got out a tape and commenced to measure end to end of a shoe. Very kindly I suggested that would not give him a true measurement because it's less than 1/2 the circle, that he needed to set both on the counter and space apart till he got the same number in several points across. Didn't seem to be listening and acted more flustered, like I was some cranky old fart giving him a hard time for not know his ch!t, when I was simply wanting the right part this time while hopefully teaching him something (his choice/denied). Finally, Rich sees he is getting nowhere and getting flustered, goes to the back, comes back with a thick book (what are those?), plops it on the counter, finds the right page with drawings of our shoes with dimensions, measures mine and tells his manager go grab him these. I'm not hard on youngins but he was sure acting like I was. He is still the same after nearly 10 years. Must have A.D.D., needs to shift down a gear and mellow out. I'm sure glad we didn't know what that was back then. We just had to learn to pay attention and learn!

That was at NAPA. If you really get stumped I can see what I can do there. But might not go well w/o shoes to assure correct application

I had a 69 chevy 3/4t 2wd with leaf springs and it had a D60. Don't remember what brakes it had.

Re: 72 K10 4x4 with replacement rear axle-Dana 60??

I have a 1969 Chevy C20 Camper Special, Dana 60 3.54 with 18k original miles. I have the build sheet and this is the original rear diff. Does anyone know how to tell if the drums come off once the two flush mounted screws are removed or if it requires the disassembly of the hub?

Re: 72 K10 4x4 with replacement rear axle-Dana 60??

if the shoes are not buried in the drum with a big lip then the drums will slide off after removal of the screws. Screws not really needed.

Thumbs up Re: 72 K10 4x4 with replacement rear axle-Dana 60??

Thanks. They did come right off. I didn't want to just start whacking them with a BFH not knowing if they were supposed to come off that way. Love this forum.
