I pinpointed where the leak is coming from. About half way down my driver side door frame (right where VIN plates are) it's fairly wet with gas. I'm trying to upload a picture but so far am not having any luck. Does anyone know what the heck that would be?

So here's a crazy thought/idea. It appears that the VIN and GM plates were reproductions and I think the guy before me used too long of screws! When I backed off one of the screws and retightened what do you know - a steady leak seeping down the inner door frame and dripping off my running boards. I think one of the screws may have pierced the tank!

The tank shouldn't be that far over into the cab corner. Your talking the tags on the cab on the back of the door wall that the door locks to when shut. Right?

Just a little advice. If you smoke quit! Then remove the seat to give you room to work, remove the cardboard covering the tank and find out why a screw in the B pillar can cause a leak in the tank which should be 4 or 5 inches away from there! Sounds like the PO hacked something up and if the truck were mine I would find it and fix it right away.
I intend to die in a rocking chair on my back porch, not in a gasoline fire.

Haha, luckily I quit smoking awhile back! The guy before me used 2-2.5 inch screws to attach the tags versus pop rivets. I'm almost positive that's the culprit. What do you think?

I should note that I can feel the screw at least coming close to the tank on driver side door (only place where I've seen evidence of gas).

Andy4639 - yes. If I could upload a darn pic it would make a lot more sense! Anyhow, I'll be calling the shop tomorrow. I'm all for diving in elbow deep, but not when it comes to leaking gas. Like Taibo said, I'd rather go out a different way!!

if it is in fact a leak from a small screw hole it is quiet easy to fix with either marine tek epoxy or something similar like jb weld and it will stop the leak and hold up for many years just cut the screws so they are shorter and don't cum near the tank

I evidently don't know how to quote someone. Cdowns has given a good repair. Yes I went and looked at the '67 if u run a 2.5 inch screw on the passenger side of the tag I think it would hit

Mine is a 71 model and the tank in the cab is long gone but dang I don't remember it going that far over. I could put stuff in the cab corner pockets when it was in the truck. But if that's the case then I would drain it and fix it for sure.
As stated by cdowns not that bad of a job and you may not have to drain it either.

I'm almost positive that's where the leak is. I ran it down to about 1/4 tank today and while it's still dark around the tag it's not dripping. I'm sure left turns slosh up the gas so it'll probably always be damp until I fix it. I was shocked when I saw that screw there! Oh well, dealing with an old vehicle right? We'll get her! Shame is she's running like a top too. Just take shallow breaths . Thanks all, any other tips aporeciated. If not, hats off to the bow tie!

After you resolve the fuel leak, you might want to dig deeper into the screwed on VIN plates. Makes you wonder what other wonderful mods the previous owners have done.

Hi all, sure enough - 2 holes from screws. 1 punctured and the other nicked. Both holes sadured and seal all applied around whole filler neck for good measure. VIN plates will be reattached with pop rivets this time. Sheesh!!

If you ever plan on selling the truck, you may want to consider having your state troopers reattach the vin plate. Buyers tend to get really skeptical when vin plates are being fooled with.

Lefty - great call. I have them in my glovebox for the time being. I will certainly do that. Not planning on selling any time soon, but always want to be a straight shooter. Happy to have her stink free!!

I got into a pizzin match when I recommended replacing fuel lines to prevent an underhood fire on a previous post. I going to stick my neck out again and recommend replacing other hoses too. use fuel lines and not heater or "other" lines as they might not be compatible with fuel/alcohol.

another possibility is pin hole rust holes in yout gas tank and the sending unit o ring.

Glad the problem was found, be aware these trucks are known for gas cap leaks with a full tank and right hand turns.

Mine does this and I removed some of the rubber gas cap gasket and do not fill it up to the top.

You might try spraying down the cab corners and seat with an odor eliminator...should help with the leftover odors. It made a huge difference in mine.

mine smells of gas sometimes, that's not stinky... my loving wife bought fresh shrimp from a friend of hers returning from the coast. the bag of "fresh" shrimp leaked on my floor... now that was stinky lol. good luck with your gas smell though.
