Then use the timing tape to see exactly what the timing is doing. That will help you get the initial timing correct and tell what the hei is doing as the rpm goes up. A timing curve that is out in left field will cause all kinds of issues. Now we need to talk about fuel pressure. Much more than about 4 psi at idle and 5 while running will make it unhappy.

Excellent advise

Re: New Cam/heads and it wont start. Help!

I put my timing light on while I was breaking in the cam and noticed that as the rpm increases, my timing would retard. But before I could verify this, I burned up my plug wire clamp!

so I need to get a new timing light and find out whats going on.

Re: New Cam/heads and it wont start. Help!

I started my truck and got a series of small backfires through the carb. When I got it running... Well, It definitely retarded my timing when the rpms climbed. I set my initial timing to 8 degrees with the plugged vacuum advance and the carb port. It went from 8 to zero as I reved the engine. But it had better responce than before I had just adjusted the inital timing. I plugged the vacuum advance back into both ports on the carb and the idle didnt really change. And I felt veryy little vacuum off of each port. By this time I had noticed my headers were glowing red and shut her down. Then I bowed my head in shame and went inside foe the night to write this post.

Any ideas? Junk my distributor and buy a new one? Lol FML
