Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

I've restored quite a few of these factory ac/heater parts. Haven't had any complaints yet, knock on wood. Went through pretty much everything on this 70 and it left the shop blowing 38° on 134a. But I'd like to mention that to get them working great with 134a a few things should be done including getting a nice size parallel flow condenser and a Poa valve that's calibrated for 134a.

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

I need to reinstall it. At least a new condenser is in order. It's been off quite a while. At this point I'm unsure what should be done with the install. Nice looking heater box up there.

Book marked, thank you. I've browsed a few threads on R12 Vs R134........Not sure what I'm going to do. Found a can of R12 when I recently repacked the compressor and lines. I discovered duct tape IS NOT how to cap the lines (23 years ago, hard to believe). Just leaves a mess and corrosion......1/2" and 3/4" drip hose capped with duct tape are the ticket.

So you restore this stuff huh? Do you do anything for the Air/Defroster Selector Duct flapper? The rubber is a bit worn on the end, which is probably common. Few scratches on the finish of the box. Might be worth refinishing.

It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I thought has another pic showing the door, rod and gasket before I installed them into the duct, but I can't seem to find it. The door and rod were replated though.

Nice. The boxes were brown I believe (I'm colored blind). Have you tried duplicating the color?

I think you're right, gray-brown-green (ha).....Here's an original. Little dirty. I haven't cleaned the interior in decades.

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

I live in the high desert. 6500 feet. Very little to no humidity. Who needs an air conditioner?

Ok, there is like 14 days in the summer that it would be nice to have A/C after being parked in the sun all day. But other than that the heater is more important.

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

How can you find a leak once the freon is gone? I can -detect- a leak by vacuuming it down and seeing that it can't hold vacuum, but how do you (or I) sort out where that's coming from?

You could pressurize it and use soapy water, but compressed air might be too "wet" for the system, I'd hate to find that out the hard way.

Just FYI, mine was a brown-grey and this was a reasonable facsimile to it:

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

you pressurize it with nitrogen. Happened to me on the 70 that I recently restored the ac system. Vacuum wouldn't hold and everything had been gone through. pressurized it with nitrogen and the problem was I had bad orings on the couplers to the machine.

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

How do you do that? Go to a welding shop, would they have tanks of it? Then you need adapaters and hoses I imagine to connect the tank, but you'd want a regulator of some kind because I'm sure the system wouldn't tolerate tank pressure, would it?

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

Yea just need a regulator on the cylinder and hose the proper fittings. I do a lot of pressure checking with nitrogen on my welds so I already have all these things. not sure about welding shops but I would imagine a shop that deals primarily with ac(not just a regular automotive repair shop) has these tools also. I would look for one of them.

Re: Does your Air Conditioning Work

Mine doesn't because the PO ripped it all out and even welded the vents closed in the dash. Had no idea it was an AC cab until I stripped all the paint and found the vent holes under 1/2" of bondo. I went ahead and ground out the bondo and tack welds and installed new vents after I painted my truck. One day I'll put the rest of the AC system back in. Can't understand why someone would rip it all out even if it didn't work! It's always been in Ca and it gets hot here!

We're at 40-38 for a "works-doesn't" split, just about a perfect 50/50.
