Re: Darwin Awards

Yesterday we had framing contractors drive a telehandler up a neighbor lady's driveway, hang a right, and drive all the way across her front yard. With all the rain we have had, use your imagination.

Here's your sign.

"Ya think she'll mind?"

"Heck no, she ain't even home"

I built a front porch across the front of my house. One was already in the middle, about 1/3 the width of the house. In preparation for the power company to do a power-up and bury the cable, I dug and poured the footers for the outer ends to be sure the cable didn't run through it and stay outside the structure. They gave me a date and I was all ready for them. The evening before, I came home and the slope in front of my house was all tore up. I guess they came early. I followed where they trenched to the house and there was a big hunk of curing concrete laying on the ground and the cable run right through where it went. The guys says, "That chunk of concrete was in the way. We had a heck of a time getting it out". I said, "You're going to have a heck of a time putting it back, too. Couldn't you see it was fresh concrete? That was the footer the cable was to be run around"

Modern Healthcare

Chemistry 101: Oxygen is not flammable. High concentrations of oxygen used during surgeries are a potential fire hazard for patients, but that doesn't mean the O2 gas itself catches fire.
Shorty, go pee on an electric fence and report back to us.

Re: Darwin Awards

In high school our science teacher was telling us how a bunsen burner worked. He was saying the gas would not burn without oxygen. So one kid says you mean if you open that valve on the desk and hold a match to it the match will blow out, teach says yes. Of course this required proof. The resulting demo. sent a flame about six ft. across the room and a very embarrased teacher. He didn't account for the air joining in as the gas came out.

Re: Darwin Awards

Yeah, air isn't inflammable, but it is everywhere ready to encourage and assist anything that is.

What turned out with that power hook-up? It turned out "lucky". They weren't hooked up yet. They were able to clear more dirt and pull it an inch or so, which was just enough to drop the footer in and barely miss that cable. If that cable was already there when I dug the footer I would have come within a couple of inches of electrocution. If there was no taper in the footer it would not have cleared. I'm glad the soil the footer was dug into was stable. You'd never know, 25 years later, any of that happened. No settling at all. Never did a precast footer till then

Re: Darwin Awards

Here's one from work last week. Yes that is a baggage tug down one flight of stairs into the Basement of the Terminal. We had to send an electrician out to kill the power so the tug could get towed up to the top. It gad to jump an 8" curb, travel about 30' and have dead on accuracy to go where it went. Needless to say, there is a concrete bollard being installed this week. Here's your sign.

Re: Darwin Awards

Times like this I am amazed at the level of skill it took to screw up. Now, If that person could just find a away to re-channel all that high level of skill towards a more positive result....

I called my power company the other day and a recording said it could be a 6-7 minute wait and gave the option to be called back. I took it and hung up. The phone rings within 15 seconds and it's a recording telling me there is a wait and they suggest lower volume times to try, then put me on hold!! HUH?? What just happened???

The power company finally beat me into submission.

I have residential rentals so I regularly have to turn power on and off. I finally gave in and set up an account to do it online. Now that I have gotten used to that, I actually dread that thought of having to talk to a human being about the transfers. They even text me when it is done.

Well... not sure I can add anything to this story. The gene pool, or pond in this case, got a little bit cleaner...

Man who died in fatal crash was pantsless, distracted watching porn

This one brings to mind far many images and questions... like,

...what position was his body in when they found him on the road... one hand clutching his phone and the other something else?
...was he steering with his knees?
...are new commercials coming out about not texting, face timing, snap chatting and... well, you know.
...should smart phones be sold to stupid people?

Said it before, people keep coming up with new ways to screw up. Single car crash. Going too fast? Nope. Poor road conditions? Nope. Mechanical issue? Eh, sort of
