Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

x20 on sticking with the 250, especially over a 307. People walk by a sea of SBC and LS trucks at shows to see and talk about my grimy old 250. Great smooth running & reliable engine.

Grumpy nailed it regarding increased I6 popularity. Used to be nobody wanted them. Complete 250 master rebuild kits including rings, pistons, cam, lifters, etc, sold for $189 ten years ago because companies were trying to unload old stock. Now the same exact kits with same name brand parts sell for near $400, if you're lucky.

Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

As far as people commenting at shows, I've only been in one and nobody said anything. My engine and engine bay are perfectly detailed as well. I won't be in any more, too long of a day. I prefer to drive there, check everything out and leave. I'm looking to swap mine out purely for the fun factor when driving. I honestly think the 3OTT hurts more than the 250 but there is no way I can justify a transmission swap for that motor.

I think someone previously mentioned it and I will reiterate......do what makes you happy. If you think the 307 is it, go for it.

Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

I have a 292 L6 [with some performance mods] and a similar upgrade: Offy intake, Clifford headers, 4 Bbl Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM. I put a Weiand intake, Headman Hedders and a 600 CFM Carter AFB on the 350 V8 in my '71 GMC Jimmy 4x4, and it does not have the HP that the 292 in my '68 C/10 Stepside has.
Also your 250 weighs 100 lbs less than any SBC.

Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

I have already been through your dilemma. I also did the research to rebuild my stock 250 in my 1970 C10 short box. I took a compression test and found that the 2 middle cylinders were down on compression. I priced out the rebuild, Clifford intake. Header, cam and duel Webber carbs. I thought this would be awesome and quit a different show piece at the car shows, etc. after tallying it all up big $$$$$$$$$, I changed my mind a purchased a new crate 350 from Jegs. I wanted to make it look like it came from the factory and installed it in the correct V8 position, about 3.5 inches forward from the inline. I keep my manual 3 speed but I had to mount a new V8 crossmember. Also different clutch linkage, longer drive shaft, motor perches and mounts. The proper holes are already there in the frame to use. I also added headers and a dual Magnaflow exhaust. I added a new aluminum radiator with dual electric fans. I also added power steering since I had to buy new pulleys anyway. I also detailed the engine bay while I had everything apart. It came out beautiful even if some of my friends still bad mouth me because they wanted to see the 250 built, they all have small blocks though. Good luck on your decision, I know it took me a long time to make up my mind. I did sell my 250 and made a little money to off set the cost. The guy who bought tin buys c10's to fix up a sell. The motor he had was toast so he bought mine. He didn't care about the need of the rebuild because he was just going to sell the truck anyway.

Cool Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

I'd offer him $200 for the 307 then sell those corvette valve covers he has on there for $200 on eBay

You might find these factory ratings for '68 interesting:
http://oldcarbrochures.org/NA/GM-Tru...olet-Pickup-14

While the 6's aren't fire breathers, yours is likely already equaling the output of a stock 307. The 6's are solid engines, but the same can't be said for 307's. And to install one correctly requires moving the bell housing crossmember, hence a different driveshaft.

Here's an idea for you. Check out my buddy Diceman's 58 Apache with a supercharged fuel injected 6.

Boost the straight 6. Single turbo and fuel injection would probably make more power than the 307.

Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

You can't just relocate the bell housing crossmember. You need the one for the V8 installation since it fits further up on the frame. The frame angles different as you move forward so the six cylinder version doesn't work. Unless of course you mount the V8 in the six cylinder position or 4 wheel drive position which can be done as some guys on here. I didn't like it because it puts the dizzy to close to the fire wall for me. If you do though you can use the same driveshaft and everything.

Re: keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc

I,ve run chevy 250,s since 72 and the only thing I dislike is the intake / exhaust manifold leaks after 50-60k miles so if you don't mind changing the gasket nothing else wrong with a chevy I-6 .
p/sdont get one hot as youll be replacing the cracked head.........................
