I haven't been to ours in years, but don't re call too many good vists. The would often walk around with you to make sure you didn't snag a piece of chrome or something. Or even though I would see 3 or 4 from the road, they would say naaaw we jus dont gots any of those trucks youre talking about (you have to read in youre west Texas accent) Or the worst yet "just tell me what you need, I'll look for it and get back with you. I never know what I need til I see it.

I thought they were in bussiness to make money. Gotta show a little intrest to do that.

When I first got my truck, the ignition bezel was all messed up where the PO had been using a screwdriver to start it. So I just assumed that you couldnt buy them new locally, went looking at at junkyard. Found one in a truck with key and everything, pulled it off while I was there, took it up front. Told the guy what truck I got it off of and asked how much it was. He looked at it, said I dont even know what the hell it is and I'll take $25 for it. I said No thanks and left it sittin on his desk. Went to autozone and got one for like $7.
I only have one yard where I can walk in and out as I please. The others want to know exactly why you are there, as in what part do you need and leave.

There are, for all intents and purposes, two yards locally. Neither has a single truck from these years; both will crush anything that old the minute it rolls into the yard. If what you're looking for is more than 10 years old, they simply look at you like your crazy when you ask.

There were 3 or 4 semi-private yards at one time that all had a fair number of vehicles form these years. Two are completely gone; the other 2 are going. The owners all claim they were getting ripped off at night and hassled unmercifully by guv'mint men. Therefore, they called in the moble crushing units, and they will soon be history.

MOST OF THE ONES AROUND HERE ARE PRETTY GOOD, & WILL LET YOU WANDER AROUND & CHECK STUFF OUT FOR FREE. SOME ARE TOTAL ASSHOLES & DON'T GET ANY OF MY BUSINESS. BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER..... IT'S THEIR YARD.... THEIR CARS & TRUCKS, & THEY ARE FREE TO CHARGE WHATEVER THEY THINK THE MARKET WILL BEAR. YOU HAVE TO TRY & PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES. IF SOME GUY COMES IN & THINKS YOUR A 2ND CLASS CITIZEN, I WOULDN'T GIVE HIM THE TIME OF DAY EITHER. MATTER OF FACT... HE'D BE LUCKY TO GET AWAY WITHOUT A GOOD OLD FASHOIN ASS BEATING.

Yeah, the people that run these places think that they should be able to have just as much income as someone that goes to college so they charge high prices

I have been to just about every junkyard around my home town. Some are great, others are horrible.

There is one in Cabool that is proably over 100 acres, filled with 40 or 50 67-72's, alot of older stuff, Impalas, Firebirds, Mustangs, several 1st gen F-bodys, some Mopar muscle, and alot of caddys. Tons of stuff from the 60's and 70's. The only problem is that the guy charges up the a$$ for everything. $75 for a dash out of one of these trucks. One of my friends wanted a rear valance for his mustang....the guy wanted like $65 and a new one is $75, and you have to pull it. The guy is getting up in his 80's......after he is gone i dunno what will happen to the yard. Hopefully they won't call in the crushers!

Another around here is way out in the middle of nowhere. I bought some parts from them a few years ago and i was very pleased. $30 for a dash, $5 for a headlight switch. The owner was clean, instead of covered head to toe in grease, and seemed to always be in a good mood. Only problem is that i went back and they had lost more than half of their 67-72's. They had about 20 and now they have less than 10. Guess they went to the crusher.

The yards that i have had the best luck with have been the late model yards. I have gone to one getting S-10 seatbelts for my truck, and with my friend getting parts for his stuff. It is also out in the middle of nowhere, but the owner is one of those 45 year old guys that still acts like he is 17, lol. He has a '62 Buick Special car in the yard's garage with a 427 BBC and a 6-71 supercharger. When they were pulling the belts out for me, the guy sat there and told me and my friend about how fast the car is and all the fast stuff he had when he was younger and giving us good advice. His prices were pretty good too. I will go back there next time i need to get some parts for my parents vehicles.

There is one my dad got bite by a dog in.He could have sued the crap out of them.Since he didn't they let him walk around as he pleased and got alot of stuff for free.They wont let me do that though.There is another one that I like.There just isn't any 67-72's.Even though one time I was there the guy told me he would sell me the ground effects off a 3rd gen camaro for 50 bucks.I told him alright and they went to get the car.I swear to you the driver of the biggo loader/forklift put the forks straight through the ground effects on one side.I just turned around and left.


There are 2 more south of here.One had a 67 swb.The guy told me he wanted 400 bucks for it.It had no no motor or trans but the body was in good shape and it was had a 4 speed.Come back with a trailer and the money 2 days later and the guys son tell me it was never there.And the owner wasn't there either.



There is another one with about 8 67-72's.One is a LWB with a 327 and a 4 speed.I can't figure out the year though.It has a GMC tailgate and leafs but it has a 71 front clip off of a chevy.The guy wants 700 bucks for it.I wouldn't mind having it.I already got my 2 projects though.

I have my little secret yard that has a lot of these trucks, but he is high with the prices.

About 8 years ago, I put money down on a very clean 72 Cutlass rolling body. He was going to put it aside until I come back that friday with the rest of the money. I went to watch it being moved off to the side, and the fork lift driver speeds up the the car side and puts dents in the rear 1/4 and front of the door. He proceeds to swing the load around to head to where he was to put it, and hits the front fender, headlight, and grille on another junk car. He dumps it off the forks instead of setting it down, and bends the lower rear 1/4 on the other side. The owner then refused to give me a refund, after I told him what his worker did.

Most of the yards around here don't have any of these trucks anymore (at least that's what they tell you when you call).

A few years ago, I was looking to replace a set of broken leaf springs. I called up this one place, and they're like "yeah I got a set." I drive an hour to get there, hop in this van (imagine the worst looking van possible) and ride around the yard with the old fart, get to this truck, and he says "huh, I thought there were some springs there". I was PISSED. I drove 2 hrs for this old fart to tell me he thought there was some (and he knew I was driving that far cause he gave me directions).

Higher education is a definite benefit for those who desperately need it! LOL!

Most of my "college" friends have a pocket full of "plastic" and always complain about being "overdrawn", they have a "new"everything, actually own very little, and always want more!
However, they do serve as a fine example of the theory that "It is entirely possible for a person to be educated beond their intelligence!"

Most of my "yard owner" buddies have a pocket full of "cash" that would choke a horse, actually OWN what they own, and the only complaint that I hear is that scrap is down, and they should have got $120,000 outta that last "crush" instead of a measley $80,000!!
The ability to "not follow the herd" and think for yourself, risk your OWN capital, follow your OWN vision, and make your OWN way, maybe SHOULD BE REWARDED WITH A HIGHER INCOME!

Most of the yards around here are pretty cool about browsing, but unfortunately most of our trucks in this state suffer from "iron worms"!! Options are the only good finds.

One yard that I grew up visiting for years, suddenly up and fenced off all the 67-72 trucks after some MORON from the city came down and started jabbering about "collectibility" and "rare", etc. He has two decent 67-68 CST bucket setups, a few BB trucks, some Cheyennes with tilts, big truck tachs, lots of stuff.
Now he won't sell any of it! Go figure!

BTW, most "pick-ur-part" yards don't charge to let you look, they charge to let you on the property. (LIABILITY INSURANCE)
It's their way of collecting $$$ for their outragous premiums!

There's one Junkyard around here that has so much land he just collects cars and dont really crush them till there is nothing left. He has 3 yards, 2 humongous ones with the older ones and one smaller with the newer vehicles. So far I went about 3/4 of the way into one yard and saw about 30-40 67-72's. He has one wierd looking jeep truck, I think it was like the one they showed on Trucks! one time. He has pretty reasonable prices as long as you dont catch him on a friday, because all he is worried about is going to bars and stuff like that. I paid $275 for my complete, running, non smoking 305.

I used to think yards did not want to sell their goods, it is somewhat true. They do not want to sell to the public, it is not worth the trouble as far as they are concerned. From what I have learned the parts from the wrecking yards are sold to colision centers for a premium. My friends 92 chevy truck was stolen and damaged. Wrecking yard parts were used on the repair and the prices charged to the insurance company were the same or more than new OEM parts. All yards may not be like this but I believe it to be the norm in California as I have seen other evidence to support this.

Most yard around here are more interested in selling rebuildables. I even seen several at auto auctions buying the wrecks to sell. That don't want to mess with selling parts

I am glad to see that i am not the only one with ****ty wrecking yards. I went to another place on saterday, I went looking for a long bed bed ! I found one needed some minor work, but I am useing it for a trailer. I went to ask the guy how much he wanted for the whole truck, he told me $1300, for the truck. I then asked how much for just the bed and he told $1000. I laughed my a$$ off on the way out. That guy has a few trucks back there but he is on your a$$ the whole time, want ing to know what you are looking at like you are casing the joint.

I guess I need to get out and start looking in other places for wrecking yards.

The yards here are pretty good. The yard I use the most has nothing but trucks. I have bought alot of rust free parts at good prices.

theres one yard here that advertises in every "Buy & Sell" aka-bargin hunter or whatever. Anyway, this guys ad centres around the fact that we have more used tires then anywhere in Winnipeg & that "There are plenty of good tires in the tire pile!" (a direct quote). So I'm there one day & I KNOW from before that the guy is a nut BUT if you are nice & speak only when spoken to, you'll get the part you need. So I was sitting on a stack of tires just outside the office door waiting for a worker to escort me to where the part I needed was in the yard. These two guys with eastern eoropean accents go into the office & about 30 sec. later the owner starts screaming "We got no tires! Get out! We got no tires!" So the guys walk out & look back and say "But it said in your ad that you had lots of tire?" & the owner yells back "I said we got no tires!" (I'm sitting on the side of a pile of about 200 tires outside the door!) Those guys asked for tires and he flipped out.... I'm told that if he doesnt like the way you look or your accent then he FLIPS!
