On page 9 and post 211 this guy gives the most in depth explanation of foam types and density for seat repair, pretty interesting. Link takes you to page 9 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=456911&page=9

Re: !
Thanks for the reply !
That would be Tim @ Truckseats, I bought my covers from him, good stuff. I'm currently waiting on a reply from him on who makes his cushions and if he has had any issues like you described. Gary Quote:

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
Yeah Jim did a great job of repairing his seat, and very informative. But if it comes to that I'll let the upholster do it !

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
Just wanted to update my experience with the cars ins #580 seat foam for my 1972 full foam seat
I bought the foam and seat cover from cars, had it installed at local upholstery shop. Looked great, was super happy until I realized I no longer fit in the truck. The foam is EXTREMELY stiff. I weigh 260lbs and foam barely compresses. Legs hit the steering wheel and head is into the roof Going to try the PUI foam next. Seems alot softer |

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
My original seat looked just like yours if not worse. I bought new covers from Brothers Trucks but next time would get them from Tim. I then went to Fred Meyers a local grocery and hardware store and bought foam from them. i bought 3" tall and just wider than the original seat. I used spray glue from 3M and i went to a garage sale and for 5.00 i bought an electric knife. So i glued the new foam to the old foam and then started forming it with the knife, then i used an air grinder with 80 grit sand paper to smoth over the edges. I then put the cover on, use the hog ring pliers and for under 200.00 i rebuilt my seat. Now it is not perfect, but it looks good and is very comfortable. not to hard to do if you ask me.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
I got my seat back from the upholstery shop today. Huge improvement with the PUI foam over the Cars Inc foam. I now have a few inches above my head and couldn't straighten out my neck before
Hopefully this saves someone the headache I went through |

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
I ended up having my upholstery shop get the replacement foams for my seat, they are also PUI. He only used the bottom cushion, the back cushion didn't fill out the cover completely so he reused my original back because it was in good shape. The seat is definitely firmer than the original, but I still have about 3" above my head ( I'm 5'11" ), hopefully this will be enough. The truck still isn't on the road yet so only time will tell. Oh and yes I have replaced the rusty slides under the seat. "LOL"

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
I used the high-density foam (can't remember who I bought it from) and I sat way too high in my truck as well. I ended up cutting 1.5 inches out of the brackets. It is perfect now.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
That came out nice!
Add me to the list of "new foam was too high" people. I'm 5'8" and my head is only +/-1" from the ceiling. I've left it along for a year hoping it would settle in some, which is has, but nowhere near enough, I'm going to have to undo the bottom cover and trim at least an inch off. I can just tell by your pic that your bottom foam is more factory correct than the one I got.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
I am having seat problems with a new truck I just purchased. Too much foam in the seat. I am 6'6" and 270 and I don't fit great in these trucks anyway.
My head is hitting the roof and my legs are really cramped. The other three trucks I own are really comfortable. The truck is a 70 c10 cst with the thick seat foam. Any ideas? |

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
There is a company that makes lower seat brackets that may help with the head room, but probably not so much for your legs. I believe they were fixed ( Non-adjustable ) I'm sure someone on here knows who makes them.

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
There was a small company at C/10s in the park a few weeks ago that makes lower seat brackets. They are based out of Texas. I will see if I can find their contact info. Maybe someone else has here their contact info?

Re: Bench seat foam "help"
I used the full custom fab seat rails. Worked out well I fit in the truck now. When I did my seats I used PUI seat foam if everyone says they are not stiff I can't see it. I am contemplating putting the old upper seat back foam back in. Bottom feels ok on long drives. The back foam makes it feel like I have a pillow at my lower back like a radical lumbar support. Very comfortable.
I used Amercan cushion industries foam in my Chevelle and they were perfect in every way. If I redo the truck completely I will use them.
