Re: Radiator trivia

I left a message for my friend but I did a google search on "radiators for 1000 hp engine" that came with a link where the same question was posted elsewhere. Someone stated that a 3 row aluminum radiator with 1-1/4" core would be sufficient to effectively cool a 1000 HP. It also mentioned that Rowe Racing radiators made those custom radiators. Dang, a 1000 hp engine would be nice to have.

Re: Radiator trivia

Grumpy Old Man makes a good point. We did not need fancy radiators back in the old days. Most of my hopped up muscle cars were fine with the factory 3-row. Seems to me that in most cases aluminum and multi electric fan set ups are a band-aid for other issues.

1,000 HP is small taters compared to industrial units. A common one I built was the CAT 3408 twin turbo engines. Two days straight at 2,000 HP at 2,000 RPM in the run in room before sending it back. They often sent me to the radiator department when I had no engines to machine & assemble. Many big industrial units we repaired were huge "Grommetized" rads with dozens of individual copper tubes clad in copper ribbon affixed to end plats with rubber doughnuts. Fun stuff.

Re: Radiator trivia

He said the same thing I got off google, they do a 3 row of 1-1/4" core to cool off their big engines. They live in a small town with 1000 people or so and their local radiator shop custom build their radiators. I am sure someone in your area can do the same or you can contact Howe Custom Radiator. Here is the link that I was referring to: http://www.impalas.net/forums/15-hea...2-3-4-row.html

Re: Radiator trivia

After a bit of reading it seems there are a couple options. Griffin makes a 2 row aluminum with 1.25" tubes w/trans cooler, it's a direct fit for 67-72 trucks and they want about 500 bucks. Champion has a 2 row aluminum with 3/4" tubes for about 400 bucks. Howes racing has a direct fit 2 row with 1.25" tubes for around 500 bucks. And BeCool is the same, 1.25" tubes for 560 bucks, 2 row. The Howe racing and BeCool websites are saying that a 2 row aluminum radiator with 1.25" tubes will cool a 1000hp motor no problem. This is two very reputable companies involved with super high performance stuff, which makes me think that anything larger would just be overkill really, and expensive lol. The Champion 2 row has 3/4" tubes and their 3 row has .63" tubes, so if I want 1.25" tubes it's not Champion which leaves just a couple companies. I'm gonna call both and order from one, I'll post up some pics and let you guys know how it goes.
