Your thoughts behind closing the heat riser? I was thinking I did a good thing by realizing it was stuck in the 'up' position.

The tab was in the up position when I got the truck. When we installed the new exhaust, we knocked it into the down position, which seemed to improve flow to the passenger side exhaust pipe. The driver's side still blows more smoke though, but it did improve.

I thought it was stuck closed.
It should be free to move though.

From what I've researched:

When the tab is UP, it's closed.
When the tab is DOWN, it's open.

When I got the truck, it was stuck UP and probably was for years (I have no idea......)

So would you still say to put it back into the UP position?

I assumed you looked in the pipe when you moved it.
Once again, without a pic it's hard to troubleshoot it. There's several different ones.

With that one, when the tab (which is actually a calibrated weight) is down then the valve is closed.
The coil holds it shut when cold. When the coil heats up it allows the exhaust flow to open it (tab up) easily.
That way you get heat from the exhaust diverted under the intake to heat the carb plenum when the motor is cold. Makes for better warm ups.
If yours is stuck closed (tab down) that could cause some of your problems.

Hmmmmm, from what I researched, it seemed like it's best to have it stuck in the down position, but I am newer to this stuff than you and others on this site. I'm learning the ropes of this truck as I go

The trouble did seem to start more after we installed the exhaust though, which is also when we repositioned that tab. I'm going to move it back into the 'up' position, drive it for a few days, and observe.

Someone above mentioned to pull the valve covers and look for sludge in there too. That seems like something simple I could do without causing any problems too. If I do pull them, would a new set of gaskets be needed when re-installing them?

The passenger side valve cover recently started leaking too, so I should probably get a new set of gaskets soon anyways.

UP .... DOWN why are you confusing the situation .... LETS talk OPEN OR CLOSED ....... IN the pic posted the VALVE is CLOSED if it is stuck (which most older ones are) in the closed position = BAD......... If you OPENED it then your good to GO ......... I think its time to bury that horse

Because all I can see is a tab that is up or down, so that's what I'm speaking in terms of.

That's as far down as it goes.
See the stop on the opposite end right by the coil where's it's hooked up.

Fix the exhaust and test it.
Then look at gaskets. Changing them out might not help if you have excess crankcase pressure. They'll blow out again.

Got it Geezer. Operation 'move the riser tab back up is in effect.'

It might not be the root of your problem, but always good to re-visit the last thing you did when the problem occurred.

Thanks to both of you. Just for fun, I'll put it back to the way it was and see what happens over the next few days. I don't drive the truck enough to be putting on alot of miles. Maybe 5-10 miles a day, MAX.

OK, so I have some time today and wanted to look into what's going on under the valve covers.

Geezer, I know I should be doing the PCV hose, but this was much easier for the time I have today and this will supply some pics and a video too.

So here are the pics of what I see under the valve covers and also the video of the truck running. Notice the pooling and dripping of oil on the driver's side towards the end of the video. This is also the side of the engine that smokes the most.

Any help is appreciated, as I am still learning and 100% admit that.

Looks clean!
Should be no problems with sludge buildup anywhere. The pcv canister inside the intake should be good too.
