Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find
Jocko the one in your second picture w/ gree grass under it was Josh Quillen's old 66 and that truck was my inspiration already to continue chasing this truck...Josh and I have been friends a long time and I should have my butt kicked for letting his trophy winner get away in the first place. Since that time, "Patina" trucks have begun to rule the roost at the shows garnering all the attention and praise over fully restored vehicles of every type. Nothing stirs the imagination like an unrestored vehicle - especially one with known history to boot. I am going to preserve this one under some professionally applied flat clear and re-do the white areas with flat matching patina'd white I think and drive it to all the shows this Summer

Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find
Really cool! IMO, it's too legit to re-do the top. I've seen the white portion age like that many times, so to me it looks like what it is, real. If you are dead set on the top being white again, I may have a solution (literally). PM me if you are interested. Again, great score!

Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find
Thanks everyone for the compliments and suggestions - I am leaving for a duck hunting trip in Rhode Island and when I get back on the 8th I hope the Marvel Mystery oil will have done its job and when we do try for the first time to turn it over, it will be free or break free without damaging anything....I will post more on the engine when we have success or failure to report....hope you all have a great week, Roll Tide and Happy New Years!

Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find
Just got back from my trip so before I left I removed the spark plugs and shot two different types of penetrating oil in the cylinders - we do not actually know for sure its even locked up, just assuming the worst and didn't have time before the trip out of state to try and see if it would turn over. I removed the valve covers and was pleasantly surprised to find it so clean looking under there. Super clean original looking GM AC Delco 45S spark plugs in it too - all were beautiful like they were new when it was parked. soaked the push rods and valves with Marvel Mystery Oil and let it sit all week so we will be trying to turn her over this weekend. Cross your fingers! Removed the carb and despite its incredibly dirty topside, it was clean as a whistle inside. Decided to take it to the shop and rebuild it anyway - simply been sitting for too long to trust it no matter how nice it looked.
A 1958-1966 283 V8 in a 1/2 ton pickup was always painted at the factory Gray - not orange - it was so nice to see so much surviving factory Gray paint on the valve covers. The water pump was changed at some point in the early 80's at the dealership, and the dealer sprayed a close match to the correct Gray on the pump, and around the front of the motor and some on the rocker covers, so thats why you see two shades of the Gray color. Very rare to see anyone try to match the Gray which was never really available. You have to custom match the Gray. I have a code if anyone needs it for your own correct 283 restoration. The carb return spring was painted at the factory a pale, mint green color on 283's - a seldom known fact and seldom repainted correctly in restorations. My carb return spring still shows a good bit of this green paint as you see here. Can't wait to see if we can bring this sleeping 283 back to life - more updates soon

Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find
In case anyone was wondering, I did double check the suffix code just to be sure its the original engine - here's a pic. In 1965, the "WA" suffix code replaced the "M" used on all 1958-1964 283's that came coupled to a manual transmission. "WE" was used for 283's coupled to a Powerglide automatic.

I'd love that gray paint code! And I bet a lot of other guys would, too.

Great find! I'd leave it just as it is... like I did mine... and just clean it up a bit and drive it!

Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find
I have a can I used all the paint out of I have to take and get more made from, and it has a code on it - what I will probably do is get a refill and shoot a test spot on one of these rocker covers first to be sure the match is as right as I say it is, and then post the code and pic of the match....
