Re: If You Could Buy a New One
If going back in time to 1969 to a dealership, I think I would go for pretty much what I have now. Non-California 1969 CST/10 fleetside long bed, with manual drum brakes, power steering, A/C, AM radio, 350 engine, automatic transmission, and dealer bumper.
I often wonder if Chevrolet could make a special edition modern truck for 2019 with the outside body exactly as sold in 1969, but with modern interior and engine. I think that would be kind of cool. If they did that, I would add ABS brakes, and power windows, but I would want the power windows controlled by the crank handle. |

I would order 4....one for each corner, then remove 2 or 3 and sell them 45 years later or exchange them for building lot somewhere. ...lol Coley

Re: If You Could Buy a New One
My local dealer would have sold out of 72 only hooks if my crystal ball was working at that time

Re: If You Could Buy a New One
I didn't address trim levels and options, so this is a do-over.
Beyond a standard custom trim level, IMO it's hit and miss Custom Deluxe to Super. As much I like the 67, I can't speak much for the trim. My edgeucation is more 71-72.................................. I'd run at least the lower belt in all cases fleet side, and the trim is black as opposed wood grain with dark olive being the exception. I prefer the Custom Deluxe dash panel as well. Just give me some interior shine (e.g.., deluxe knobs, courtesy light....I believe code Z62 on my 71) and stainless and I'm good................ I prefer the 71 over 72 for a few reasons, primarily for the interior door. Really, give me a 67 or 71...... A 70 is somewhat a wild card, because of the secondary color option below the lower belt, white on dark blue. The Super has many features I can do without. But some are VERY cool. The custom cloth trim bench seat (perhaps superior internals as well?) is more better than a standard bench seat IMO. And the headliner is so awesome. Course I'd prefer buckets less dogs and beautiful women. Other features I'd be ecstatic to buy new in a SWB: IMO the 67 front end looks best. Especially in blue. I like the 67 trim best, which trims off the wells. But square body is a very cool look. 327 or 396/402 400 TH A/C Sport mirrors Tow hooks Cargo light Disc brakes Sway bar Chrome bumpers and front bumper guards. Coolant expansion tank. Custom emblem on the doors. Not sure the years etc., but they look super. Probably blue and black on white hub caps (71-2?). Wood bed. Wouldn't rule out a SWB step side. Hugger orange and perhaps a white top. Wouldn't rule out a LWB fleet side. 3/4 ton, Hugger orange or medium blue, bottom belts and a white top. Step bumper, camper mirrors and a steel bed.

Re: If You Could Buy a New One
Ok, a custom or custom deluxe '71 C20 or C2500 custom camper. 292 and T400 auto. 3.54 Dana with leaf springs. Power steering, power brakes and air. Below eye line RV mirrors, roof lights and sliding rear window and no body side moldings. Covered in metallic dark olive with white roof. Wouldn't be buying to please the future collector car market.

Re: If You Could Buy a New One
Well it would have been a medium blue with a white top and white bumpers (so I could get tow hooks) C20 Suburban. 1968 because you never buy the first year of a new model. 327 with the manual 4 speed with a posi 3:73 ratio. Tach, oil, amp guage set. Shoulder belts with the full cushion front and center seats. Heavy duty springs/shocks with sway bars, power brakes, and power steering, to go with the 650-16 truck tires. 62 amp alternator with heavy duty battery and marker lights. West coast Jr mirrors with soft ray glass all around. Push button radio. Then in 72 I would of have had to order a set of blue highlander buddy bucket seats and a AM/FM radio to bolt in.

Re: If You Could Buy a New One
Street (fun) version ) 1968 long box , lowered ,an air dam under the bumper like the 88 up trucks had with fog lights, rear window that the center drops down into the space the tank is now.. , 6th gen Camaro rear end with IRS . ,18" wheels but tires with some sidewall and wide but all one size so rotation can be done, the 80's truck ralle wheel in alum but not polished, more as cast centers with a polished lip and keep the dish look I hate the flat modern wheels , 454 lsx with D.O.D. and a 6 speed stick ,3:73 rear gears , electric locker,
fiber bed cover, flush with lip spoiler and 3rd brake light in it.. Tail lights all brake and turn with a darker red lens moving the reverse light to be part of the cargo light with 2 settings normal, or hit the high beam switch and get double the light for when needed.. Rear and side glass auto tinting like eyeglasses, sun out the glass tints, no sun it is clear.. Seats, Thinking 2004-06 GTO like seats but a little wider for more room for bigger guys.. with headrest speakers like the 84-86 Fiero had.. Gauge cluster, set back in dash more.. and as it be nothing more than an l.e.d. screen.. no problem there.. Speakers in the doors, about where the glass crank is.. with tweeters in the a pillar rears in lower b pillar and a shallow sub in the lower part of the center console.. Tilt wheel.. cruise, p/l p/w a/c and not much else.. Cab back wall moved 3" back.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Work truck 4x4 same as above but not lowered and no bed cover .. small oil burner engine.. with automatic.. big duramax optional.. |

Re: If You Could Buy a New One
I may be a lone wolf here, but I don't think I'd buy a new one. My ultimate joy is in building exactly what I want. If I could go back the A/C wouldn't work like the new vintage air units. We have better stereos, and options here today. Lastly we have much better options for power plants, i.e. Turbo(My personal Favorite especially when coupled with a Big Rat Motor), Nitrous, Displacement. Although dealing with the rust is a little frustrating at times, I do love building on these old vehicles. I've owned several older vehicles, A-Body, Truck etc. So to answer your question I wouldn't do anything differently, I would still build it instead of buying it new.
