Have you looked at howell performance? I just looked at there Tbi stuff they sell brand new harnesses for 350 bucks, i got my 8.1 swap harness and computer from them, everything is labeled very well and only took a afternoon to get it hooked up and positioned there instructions aren't terrible either, then all you would need to do is get one new coolant temp sensor for the computer a knock sensor, and o2 I have 1 or 2 spare Tbi distributors a stock computer from my 87 k20 and also a Tbi unit if you can't track the parts down locally, let me know

I bought a non-running bronco engine one time that had a "rebuilt" 351w engine in it. Once I started it up, i had 0 compression on 2 cylinders. Pulled the heads and saw stains on the cylinder walls (was not rough) indicating that water had gotten in there at some point. The valves on those two cylinders had started to rust not allowing them to close all the way. Had that 1 cylinder head rebuilt and all was good. That motor has 20k miles on it now and runs great. I would follow what the mechanic said and also check the condition of the valves.
