Re: New looking for help

It sure looks like someone else's headache to me, but I could be wrong. What are you looking for exactly? And what's your budget? Do you have to have a short bed? There are lots of nice long beds out there. I would sure look for a more original, not messed with truck. If you're not in a big hurry I would keep looking. Good luck

I totally agree with this comment. If all the paper work is in order (especially if it is currently registered) there should be no problems there. Crawl around under the truck and have a good look see for signs of serious rust, possible butchering and anything that seems out of place. The truck is what it is, a project. A lot will depend on the amount of work you can do yourself. I would walk away if he WON'T let you drive it.... If it goes down the road decent, runs good and the tranny shifts good I know I'd probably buy it.

Re: New looking for help

I don't know about you , but I tend to look at project trucks as a sum of all the parts. You have no tailgate so you have a bed that would run you at least 500 to buy, as well as an org short disc brake frame . 800-1000. Dog house for a 72 is at least 400, and then a titled cab, [assuming the title is ok], another 650-750. Add the accessories you would need and no telling what else IE eng, tranny, seat, gas tank, easily another 2-3000. So yes, if the title is good, I would buy it, as long as there was not a problem with the frame or another costly component.

They guy said the ID in the glove box doesn't match the original VIN.
I would still want a picture of the SPID on the glove box lid. It appears the truck was originally gold, so maybe the color remains on the back of lid?

One positive is that the engine looks pretty nice, so if it has been freshly rebuilt the engine alone might be worth $1000?

A pic of the side of the frame behind the cab where a cut and weld would have been made to make a longbed a shortbed.

He said his cousin had it rebuilt along with the trans. It sounded good in the video he sent me.

Re: New looking for help

If it were me, I would just stop looking at that secret-VIN truck. If looking for a rough old truck, there are others available that have the original paint from the factory and all the rust it has just hanging out there in the open for you to look at, and on those types of trucks it is much easier to see a real picture of what you will have to be working on. With the secret-VIN truck there is no telling how much bondo is under that spray paint.

I can't think of a legitimate reason to hide or keep secret a VIN, so that alone would make me pass, but then I'm kind of particular anyway.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the valuable input. I've learned a lot in the past few days. I did hear back from the guy, he sold the truck before I got to even see it. The waiting and watching game starts over. I look forward to finding something and starting a build thread on here so that I can continue to learn from the great group of folks on this board.

Not to be negative, but be glad that one is gone and you didn't waste a day of driving. Try not to get in too big of a hurry, a better truck is out there.

Tell us exactly what you're looking for again. This board is full of great guys willing to send leads on trucks they find.

No worries. I'd really like a SWB 2wd C10. 67-72, year isn't an issue. Budget is under $10k, lower the better so says the wife.

Hey guys, found another. This guy hasn't been afraid to share the VIN but said the glove box doesn't have the SPID.

Thoughts?

Re: New looking for help

For me, that would not be a candidate to take apart and rebuild. There's just too many modifications made to it already, such as cut down from long bed to short, grill is from 69-70, repainted, newer model steering wheel, dash cut for radio, instrument cluster from some other year, 6-lug wheels instead of 5. Somebody has already pieced it together once from all sorts of parts. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty and I like it and it's probably a good deal if you want to get get it and drive it and make mechanical repairs to it as needed. You mentioned in your first post you would like to do a ground-up build, so I don't think this is a candidate for that sort of thing. But it is probably a candidate to get in it and drive and enjoy for a while and perhaps play with minor customizing.

Correcting myself, instrument cluster may be from 72 it is just the type that has warning lights instead of gauges.

I live about an hour from it & wouldn't bother to go look at it- too rough (the first truck). The second truck has had the VIN tag removed at some point- wrong rivets. Grab a trailer & head south!

Re: New looking for help

If the title and vin plate match it shouldn't be a problem registering it even if the spid doesn't match .. it the rivets are wrong on the vin plate but the title matches that vin you should be good and if you look hard enough rosette rivets can be found and changed on the plate. The spid just won't or may not be the correct options for your truck

I second that! Be patient and look for the most original complete truck you can find. The more they have be messed with, the more work you'll have to do over unless you're lucky enough to find someone that started a light restoration on a original truck. I just picked up a one Family owned truck mostly original except one driver quality repaint. It's a 71 Short Bed Custom Deluxe with factor air. There's still some out there. Good luck with your search.
