Re: Paint or Patina?
Your truck, do what you like with it. Sounds like you would like to have the trim on it, put it on.
Or if you want a nice looking shiny pickup paint it, then put that new trim on. I kinda dig the whole patina craze going on, not for me personally, but there are some that look awesome. Kinda flavor of the month as I see it. Then there's some that just look like they got crappy old paint, and would look really nice with a paint job. It is true that once painted you will avoid taking it places that you would have if it was not painted. But, pulling into a car show,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I just bought a 71 C20 a few weeks ago with paint that is not that great (2nd paint job) so I will sort out any bugs eventually and then paint it. I like my classic cars/trucks to look nice. Just me.

Re: Paint or Patina?
Leave it for now and save the NOS stuff to pass down with the truck. I don't understand the 'patina' either. I think it's just a fad and those that paid huge money for the barn truck that was put on air bags and big rims with a cheap clear over the rust will be burned when the fad is outlived.

Re: Paint or Patina?
Leave it original paint and have fun with it. It looks like a pretty clean truck

Re: Paint or Patina?
I know my truck isn't the prettiest girl at the prom. And I go back and forth about painting it.
But I seem to have more fun with it when I don't have to worry about a scratch. I can actually use it instead of polishing it. So ugly Betty's staying ugly for now. Funny, I still have people trying to buy it off me all the time. These trucks are cool either way. I love seeing a beautifully restored truck. But I like the beaters as well. Not that yours is a beater. Far from it. (Mine is) I guess it's just all about how you want to use it.

Re: Paint or Patina?
Whether it's a shiny or patina truck, anybody who appreciates a classic will love it. I bought my first 71 402BB and got very lucky to find no rust at all. The original Hugger orange paint was dull but shined after a couple coats of wax. I also thought of restoring it but you also have to remember, a shiny new truck could be hiding a crappy panel/bondo work. If you ever want to sell, the buyer will see the originality and know exactly what he is looking at. Maybe spend your money on making it better, whether its buying wax to shine the paint or cleaner for under the hood or brakes or maybe new wheels. I have a 69 Camaro Z28 RS that I am redoing at the moment and till this day, I kick myself as the car had no rust issues and original paint was really nice. Like some say, it is your truck and you decide what you want to do with it.

Re: Paint or Patina?
If you can afford to, paint it. Nothing like washing and waxing your ride on the weekend. It always runs better afterward too!

Re: Paint or Patina?
I like them both, but I lean towards the original paint. It's easy enough to maintain & it's a whole lot easier to park at the grocery or hardware store than that bright shiny one.
Let's see some close ups! |

Re: Paint or Patina?
Just my two cents... paint it.
Patina isn't normally my thing, but I can get into it when it's an old delivery truck from a hardware store with a logo faded into the side and has been used like that for 40 years. This isn't that kind of patina, it's just wear and tear. Now if it's -your- wear and tear, maybe you call it 'character'. But I'd still paint it.

Re: Paint or Patina?
I don't think the patina thing is a fad at all, especially nice patina. I have seen what some consider to be patina but its actually nothing but rust and or no paint left at all. Nothing looks nicer to me than a nicely worn in 67-72 Chevy pickup. Beside's, has anyone priced out a quality paint job lately? I think when SOME people do bite the bullet and shell out thousands for a quality paint job they all of a sudden stop driving their truck as much. I'm lucky my all original Hugger Orange 70 Longhorn still has very nice original paint. I gotta admit, I really do appreciate seeing a properly restored truck as well.

Re: Paint or Patina?
Hafta see some detailed pictures to make a valid vote. Looks pretty good from a distance. How bad is the original trim? I've straightened and scrubbed up some pretty frowsy trim and made it match and compliment an original paint truck. NEED MO PICTURES PLEASE ......

Re: Paint or Patina?
Imo it depends on your end goal. Keeping the patina and adding nos trim is a specific look that imo needs lowered suspension and wheels to give it the finished look. Otherwise it's just shiny trim on old paint and may as well be lmc trim. Thing about the patina look is usually we have some rust issues that make full repaint kind of a pain like rockers, cab corners, drip rails etc.
If it's a good rust free body then I think a quality repaint, add nos trim, and make a real nice original example of it. But repaint all depends on budget. |
