Re: Towing with a short wheel base
Another point of towing near the limits, is a change in terrain can change everything. Back in the 70s, I was towing a dual axle U-haul with a full size car. Everything was fine until I went down a hill. That meant more weight was transferred to the hitch (non equalizing hitch) and it took weight off my front wheels and I couldn't steer and was all over the road. I was gaining speed as I went down the hill, and applying the brakes made it worse by transferring more weight to the hitch and off the front wheels. I don't know how I didn't wreck. Anyway, you want more tow capacity than you need for more safety.

Re: Towing with a short wheel base
I learn to tow with 62 CJ-5 so everything since has been much less terrifying

Re: Towing with a short wheel base
Only towing I do is a 25 foot TT on a 2005 Tundra. People tow 6K trailers and that, but I won't take the risk nor put the stress on the truck. It's just a 4.7 liter, and not heavy duty like the new Tundras. Anyway, the truck is rated 11,600. It sits dry at 5K. Add people, fluids, cargo and the camper shell, figure 2000 max. That leaves just 4600. The trailer weighs 3825 dry.
On a side, I wouldn't mind switching up to a 67-72 and vintage cabin. And I'm not going to tell you what I did with a weight distribution pipe. ![]() Lucky for us that was the last stop before home, after a great couple weeks on the right side of the coast line. Towing and cargo is serious business. I know lots of people that have been injured, and some very badly.
