Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
Stw-CT6773TS is the part # I looked back and I ordered it from summit after talking with stainless works on which kit would work. Look on my build thread on how I routed it. Good luck

All K/20s are long beds. Only 1/2 tons were offered in SWB

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
I'm getting ready to put a new exhaust system in my '71 K20. Currently it has ramhorns on it, which I am okay with. However, to the best of my knowledge they are from a square body era truck (pic shown below). Would you guys replace the manifolds prior to having new exhaust ran or run them as is? Not really wanting to spend the extra money on new manifolds but also don't wan't to have my new exhaust routed to manifolds I will be wanting to change in the future...

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
Would you mind providing a link with which ones you would go with and where you would get them from? Maybe some others will chime in as well.
Just want to get the proper fitment (rear dump, center dump, etc) for a 4x4.

Use the search function at the top of this page next to your user name (just to the left). Select the 67-72 chevytrucks.com button. Enter in "rams horn". I did this yesterday and there are piles of threads you can read through.

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
1971 K20 will be same as a 1972 K20 and use center dump ramhorns.

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
Indeed they are.... I was only thinking of center vs rear dump, didn't even think about straight vs angled. Thanks for the clarification!

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
Sorry it took so long to respond, I got my 2.5 inch mandrel bent kit from MA Performance, for some reason it took them a long time to get the order sent out, but once I got it I can say I am pleased with the product. I choose the kit because it was 16 Gauge wall instead of the 18 gauge stainless and it was 304 Stainless instead of the more popular 409 stainless. I recently learned about the classes of stainless and the 400 class stainless (which most exhaust is made from) is more corrosion resistant than steel but it surface rusts over time given the conditions. 300 class stainless is the most corrosion resistant and is a higher quality stainless. MA performance claimed the kit was made by squirrelly performance. They offered a couple different sizes of kit and individual bends as well which i thought was neat. I used Magnaflows for my mufflers. and I can say it has turned out really nice so far. I will try and get some pictures taken and posted.

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
Are the straight center dumps you see on eBay or amazon that go for around $60 per side decent enough quality for a driver?

These are the 2.5 inch corvette center dumps with alternator mounts. Anyone try this route with their K-series? Either on a K10 or K20? The PO had the exhaust run under the transfer case on mine. I got this picture off the web. |

IIRC, the pic is how the OE stock exhaust is routed. |

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
Thanks for the clarification, the PO put long tube headers and a 2.5 dual exhaust on mine. The only problem I have with it is it was the passenger side was ran under the transfer case, it is a custom exhaust system from a local shop.

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
I gottcha, I wouldn't like it under the t-case either. It might be possible to have a shop re-work just that section & run it above the cross member. I guess it depends on where the passenger side header collector is.

Re: 1972 k20 4x4 exhaust system
After looking at yours, I see why they put it under the transfer case, save time and money, that looks very tight in there. I think my truck was put together in a sequence where the exhaust was one of the last parts installed. Now it makes sense, my seals and gaskets leak 90wt close to where the exhaust pipe is, I have to have to put old cardboard/truck diaper under it.

By the way, I really like your trans and t/case color combination, that looks bad a$$!
