Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Interesting on the big block HO axled trucks. IME, only rear axle available with the big block was the 3.54 geared Dana 60.

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Something that I thought of with a photo Chevyland had posted, was their any C30 Cheyenne Super? Thinking dual wheel flat beds, forgot all about C30 Longhorns. Google showed this beauty from 2017........https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...yenne-longhorn

All I know is that most times when a BBC was selected, you got the Dana 60 and 3:54s. My orange truck originally was a C20 402 4 speed and it had a D60 3.54 posi. I used to think it was a Custom Camper thing but the Cheyenne Super above with the 4.10s is also a Custom Camper.

The c30 longhorn that I just lost in the fire was a factory BB/TH400 with a 4:56 HO72. All factory.

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Here is a wrench in our thoughts....... Look at this 69 GMC budnikguy parted out starting in 2015. It clearly states 3.73 gears in the rear end. I'm assuming that had to be a D60? First one I have seen.

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Maybe a dumb question... was the No-Spin unit an early version of what is now known as a Detroit Locker ? Sure looks similar in design....

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
I'm pretty sure the Detroit locker is the same thing. My dad always called the posi in his 69 Longhorn a Detroit locker. They're pretty dang tough!

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Resurrecting this longhorn thread. Finally getting around to finishing this truck and get it on the road. Been a lot of work for the past 14-15 years...um yeah. Anyways that's what happens with too many irons in the fire. Getting to the point, I am working on the history of this thing and trying to get info and a comparable vin I can work with. Back story on that. I found this truck in a wrecking yard that a friend of mine USED to own and got all the appropriate paper work. Truck originally was a '68 flat bed that was a flatbed (133'') that was abused. Coincidently on top of that, 1 row over was a longhorn with the front end flattened out by a tree. Move the bed over with the front mounts and haul it home. Cab on the flat bed had severe rust and the yard (my buddy) gave me another complete cab for free that had AC. I had saved the VIN plate from the flat bed. Now I wish I could find it. So what I have now is a 1 ton truck with a VIN rating this thing at 5000 lbs. Anybody have an idea how I can get this thing registered? I know I'll have to get a VIN verifier.........already have a phone number. But I know that absence of a plate is going to screw things up.

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
I bought mine from the estate of the original owner. It had 89K miles and was in spectacular condition. 350/New Process 435 (Close Ratio), Dana 60 3.73 open. Custom Camper , tach dash Etc. Etc.
My left knee is telling me to sell it. I wonder what it's worth. I recently (5K miles ago) added a GM performance crate 350.

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Put a diaphragm style 12” clutch in it and keep driving it. Unless you did that with the motor swap…

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Yup. there are things to be said about the lower pedal apply pressure of a diaphragm style clutch. #notaracingtruck

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
I'm not sure what is in there except that it came stock with the 12". I just had it replaced maybe 6K ago. I'll have to hire a crew to go through my office and find the receipt. What did these come with if it wasn't a diaphragm. I really have no clue about clutches. -BA

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Usually a Borg & Beck style 3 finger pressure plate. Took a different height TO bearing if I recall

release bearing was definitely a different height, can't remember which was taller but any semi decent parts counter should be able to match correct release bearing to pressure plate good luck!

Re: Longhorn trucks - what were the options
Not sure what I put in there but if memory serves I chose the stock replacement but a very good quality one. So maybe it's the old style. I can say that the clutch peddle is about 35 Lbs or so to depress (I could be way off) and my knee is shot driving in L.A. traffic. It would be well worth it to me to switch to a diaphragm if I could keep my truck (28 years so far). I already lubed up the linkage and removed the return spring -still a bear to operate. How easy is a 12" diaphragm in comparison?
