At $2500/forward speed I'm downright scared to look at a 10 speed.

OK, my 10 cents here. I have run most combinations: carb SB stock, built SB, TBI SB and stock LS. If your gonna run this on weekends, to shows and not to be used as a daily, built or stock SB works just fine. If you want modern technology daily driven super reliability and a bit of fuel economy shock LS or TBI are both good with the LS being the better choice. In my '46 which weighs in at a light 3450# I run a stock 5.7L TBI I average 15 MPG and have good performance @ 9.98 in the 1/8 mile. In my '47 COE which weighs in at 5400# I run a stock 4.8L truck based LS style engine I average the same 15 MPG and have almost the same performance @ 10.35 in the 1/8 mile. The 5.7 puts 187 HP to the rear wheels where the 4.8 put 243 to the rear wheels. The LS based engine and 4l60E do cost more to install due to the other components needed to support it. I have done 3 LS conversions and they average $4500 including donor components. I do all the fab work myself so that saves a bit. I do drive my '47 COE every day year round, I average 32K miles a year. When that engines lets go I will replace it with the same combo, it just works great. For long term I have not had a SB last over 200K without repairs. My LS is now over 280K with 1 only minor repair (1 coil went bad). And the ECU told me exactly what had failed. To me it comes down to long term goals.
