Re: Original Wheels with Ring

Update for anyone interested.

I found a local, family owned tire shop that has been around for years. Glad I did because I love to support these types of shops.

I brought one wheel to him, he showed me how they come off and also told me he would break them all down for me but won't mount the new tires for me. He said insurance has cracked down on them because of the danger at parades etc. He agreed with me that they were used for years and if done right and in good condition they should be fine.

They are called friction rings. They are actually oblong and on the inside, the ring is thicker on one end than the other. You look around the ring to find the slot and pry it up and then work your way around. I asked him to order the tubes for me and I will go back with all 5 wheels and have him take the old tires off. Then I can try to mount myself of find somewhere to do it.

If I mount myself, it will be in the back facing the woods and I will have a lock on air chuck and stay away when inflating. I really do want the originality.

My son in law is a mechanic and is also checking his sources for someone that will mount them.

EXACTLY AS CHIEFCFD had described!! Thank you sir.

That's great, but as I said earlier, these types of wheels really need to go to an exclusive truck tire dealer. Please don't experiment with these rims. Multi piece truck wheels are still common on heavy duty larger trucks.

Re: Original Wheels with Ring

Just a quick update.
I had the tires removed from the rim. The shop wouldn't allow me to watch.

I also bought 5 tubes and now I need flaps. Hope I can find them and also a shop to install them if I decide to do that. I may just leave well enough alone and save them for future reference or get one mounted and use it as a spare.

Haven't decided yet, but I now see how they were one. There is the ring, all one piece. It has a slot in it and also tapers. If anyone is interested in any of this, I can take pictures.

Now to call a truck tire shop in the area and see if they will do it. The shop that broke them down tells me no one is going to do them because they are trying to get people to stop using them for safety reasons. I don't think he understands the mindset of some of us who care about originality.

Let me know if anyone wants pictures or this will be the last post I bother you with on this.

Re: Original Wheels with Ring

Wheel with ring, tire, flap and tube removed:

This is a flap, goes between tube and wheel to protect tube

Here is the ring removed and then a picture to show slot in ring. That is how you pry it up to get it off.
