'72 Mirror won't stick

Go to a glass shop, I wasted money on all these products. The glass shop did it free and took him 1 min.

I always file the back of the steel button. Seems to help.

I have been told the parts store kits expire and don't get thrown out.
A shop that replaces windshields all day every day will have glue that's fresh and will hold.

What about cutting a piece of flex tape I use it roofing that ain’t coming off maybe crazy idea but it’s the stickest thing I know of

Plastic button failed: rim that holds the mirror tore off. I suspect this summer’s heat.

Bought some loctite glue: fell off as I mounted the mirror. All the glue came off with the button, meaning it didn’t bond to the glass at all. Whent and got JB Mirror Weld (again).

I don't know if this has been suggested above.* I didn't plow thru the whole two pages of threads. But when I bought a '67 K/10 Suburban in 1993, the PO had mounted a mirror on the windshield, MY '72-Style. I didn't like the way it bounced around at freeway speeds [4WD w/ BBC] so I was lucky I had a GM mirror mount [salvaged from my Dad's '64 Olds wagon]. I screwed it back on under the windshield header, and the mirror never bounced at speed thereafter.
I know the '72 MY is missing the embossed mount in the center of the header, but if it was me, I'd try an improvised spacer.

*EDIT: I see it has -- about 3 times...
In the SW desert conditions I operate in, the front on the windshield, when parked in unshaded sunlight, will probably hit 150*F, especially if getting back reflections off a silverized bubblewrap windshield shade. That kind of constant, intense heat will break down any bonding agent. The mechanical/physical connection is the only way for a failure proof mirror mount.

Not sure why anyone has problems with mirrors falling off windshields. Never had it happen even once. Used of the shelf product once and had good result.
Had windshields replaced on several cars with that type of mirror. Including a 72. Go to a glass installer and have them glue on for you. Cost is probably really cheap.
Regarding the previous post. Put my stock front glass in my 72 and the mounting tab is still good to go. So much for breaking down any bonding agent.
Have a 94 Chev with a mirror on the glass as well. Purchased new, never fell off. Glass was replaced about 5 years ago and mirror is fine. Truck has been parked outside here in SoCal since purchased.
