Re: Drum Brake Issues

This may be from out in left field, but what condition are your rear-end differential and wheel bearings in?
I've had the axel seals go bad and leak 90 weight differential on the drums and shoes. Gets really sticky and can sieze up an axel by the drum.
Besides all the PM on brake systems -- cylinders, master, springs, drums, drum width, shoe integrity, line integrity, adjustments, etc. All good advice...
A look at the rear-end can't hurt.

Re: Drum Brake Issues

If you will entertain me for a moment. Drum brakes are a different animal, altogether. These vehicles where built in an era with a focus on maintenance.

Drum brakes like to be cleaned, no rust on the components and all areas functioning properly.

Just getting around to my 3rd complete brake job, booster to every spring an pin. 150K on it since my inception. I can tell you this complete visual inspection is where I would start.

You can reuse springs and some other stuff, other parts that are not available. If you go all new it......will.........stop on a dime.

Even got my parking brake fully functioning, waiting for a little stretch in the cables. I have it set to stop the vehicle in gear from the park position.

Re: Drum Brake Issues

I managed to get the MC installed this weekend and took the truck for a 350km round trip. Everything seems to be working great and the truck now has a much better pedal feel.

Getting the truck to stop well has never been an issue. The trucks stops amazing for having all 4 drums and I can lock the wheels if needed.

I thought the booster was NFG like mentioned above but after going through it, it seems to be fine. When I upgrade to discs, I may take that opportunity to replace it though with something a bit better.

You can see in the picture below the piston I was referring to that was stuck in the back of the master.

After some forceful persuasion I managed to get it out of the old master and checked fitment of the pin end in the new master. Added a touch of grease just to be sure and re-installed.

I took this opportunity to redo a couple of the brake lines and and clean up the booster/master.

Re: Drum Brake Issues

Now I see links to dropbox where they expect me to log in to see your images. That's not going to happen.

What's so difficult to click "Go Advanced", then click "Manage Attachments" and loading directly from your computer?

When you use outside image hosting, the images can be lost to this forum when, and it will eventually happen that the hosting company changes their rules or their software or simply goes out of business.

Sorry that's my bad, not all forums allow you to directly upload the image. Ive just gotten into the habit of using an image hosting service to post pictures to forums. I didn't realize this forum allows direct uploads.

Re: Drum Brake Issues

this happened to me years back to one of the rear brakes, it was the y block where the rear lines divided, don't exactly remember the cause (clogged, valve) but once replaced it was all good. It was intermittent as well
