Congratulations on finding the cause.
For the best operation of the charging system it is best to have the fan power hooked into the harness where the alternator voltage sensing is hooked up at. If you haven't checked out the Mad Electrical web site I highly recommend it. http://www.madelectrical.com/electrical-tech.shtml
