Re: 55+ vibration - Help
I'm a tire guy and all I can add is rotate your tires front to rear. If it's a tire problem the vibration should move from your seat to the steering wheel. I know you said you tried balancing your old tires and it still vibrated but I have seen more than one set of new tires that were so out of round you just couldn't balance them.
Oh, I forgot to say I had a 383 that someone left the bolt out of the balancer and started to wobble on the crank. Also double check to make sure you have the right flexplate for the motor, internally balanced vs externally balanced. Last edited by garyd1961; 02-27-2022 at 08:10 PM. |

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
I had a lot of NVH in my Burban when I first got it running. A rebuilt drive shaft with an aftermarket carrier bearing took care of about half of it. The rest was coming from the rear end.
In the end we found the posi carrier case and the spider gears were disintegrating. (Photo below) In addition one axle had had a bearing fail at some point and it had a speedi-sleeve installed over the bad spot on the axle. Fortunately I got it fixed before the ring and pinion or the housing were damaged. As previously mentioned it would be worthwhile to pull the cover off for an inspection. Personally I would pull the axles and inspect the bearings at that point for peace of mind. Good luck and please keep us in the loop.

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
Did you install the 2 piece shaft in the correct phase?

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
Yes the driveline company that balanced it market it for me. Also this was the 2nd time the drive shaft was worked on. Earlier I had it completely rebuilt with new trans yoke, u-joints, carrier bearing and actually new front half of shaft that needed replacing. No change at that point. then I swapped out the 2004r I had for a built 7004r which meant I had to have the drive shaft shortened and then they rebalanced it again. I even enquired about the equip they used and was told they have a spicer built balancer setup which spins up the driveshaft to 3500 during balancing.

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
Since you are chasing gremlins, what about the transmission output shaft bushing?

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
Vibration didn't change when I installed a different trans in. Went from 2004r to a built 7004r

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
I know you swapped wheels front to rear for validation. What about checking to see if the vibration is still apparent w/no rear wheels? Was there any notable difference? Try again w/no drums.

Re: 55+ vibration - Help Update
OK, I think I found the source of the vibration. While I was installing pinion shims to raise the pinion a couple of degrees, I found that the leaf spring bushings are pretty much shot. when I unbolted the rear end from the leaf springs much to my surprise they had a lot of play in the bushings. Looks like the bushing had froze and was pivoting on the bolt. needless to say I have Hugh gouges in the brackets. that the leafs bolt to. I'm going to fill with weld, and install new bushings first and see if it's fixed.

Re: 55+ vibration - Help
If nothing else it will certainly help the truck drive straight on poor roads.
