I vote for buy it from your stepson and fix it up. You stated you were wanting to start a new project and your wife is telling you to keep it. Fix it up and give it to the wife.

I vote keep it. Buy it from the stepson and fix it up. The wife is telling you to fix it up so your ahead of the game there. You also stated you were looking for a new project to work on. From the looks of it you would a great base to start from. If nothing else fix it up and give it to the wife.
