Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I am myself, partial to poverty caps. Painted or SS doesn't matter. Heck I even like the 68-69 camaro caps on these trucks. I have beater caps on my shop truck and I bought a "Sunday" set to hang on to. They get bought up quick.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
Seeing all these lovely hubcaps makes me want to doll mine up. But then I'd be looking harder at the paint and the body, etc., and it would be downhill from there.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
There appears to be a new renaissance of attitudes towards appearances. IMO, the original "look" is in after decades of "whatever tickles you fancy", majority of hubcaps were tossed aside in the first days of ownership, usually for some current fad , wagon wheels, cyclone wheels, slot type wheels etc. and good hubcaps were sold cheap at swap meets and online. Different story lately, there is now a demand for good hubcaps. Hubcaps are an extension of body styling applied to the wheels. Here is a '68 C 20 ( not mine) with original chrome hubcaps, hard to beat the look, especially when hubcaps and paint on wheels are both in great condition, they compliment each other, IMO, the look is priceless. The way things are going with supply and demand on good hubcaps, some might want to stay with "whatever" at this point in the game.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
Hard to believe they still aren’t being reproduced.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
Probably due to tooling cost, and most of all GM licensing for the bowtie. Even if they were, they would likely be in the neighborhood of the earlier models that are reproduced. At $400 each, or $1600 a set plus tax and shipping, the nice OEM start to look more attractive.
https://www.brotherstrucks.com/1964-...tinfo/HCC5C66/ Those have gone up since last time I looked, but were in neighborhood of $1000 a set couple years ago. |

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
I have always run factory hubcaps. I have also run the few custom wheels that were made for trucks back then as well. But my first one of these trucks was a '72 C/10 I bought in '73. It was a Highlander, which I had no idea about back then. All I knew was I didn't want those wheelcovers. I probably thought they weren't original. They have nothing that even says Chevrolet or bowtie on them. I didn't put original caps on when I bought 8" & 10" wheels. I used '55 Chevy car hubcaps because I thought they looked cool. In the 80/90s when the National Chevy/GMC Truck Association was in existence, I had a running WTB ad in their publication for K/20 hubcaps. They were harder to find back then than they are now. When I bought the '72 K/20 Cheyenne Super Custom Camper I had in '91 the first thing I did is put powder coated 16.5 x 9.75 wheels on with hubcaps. It cost me way more than putting a set of alloy wheels on, but that was the look I wanted.
I don't think producing hubcaps again would be cost prohibitive. They would sell plenty enough to offset the tooling costs. The wheels are being made and this is the popular look. They'd sell plenty. Most purchases would be for four, unlike most all reproduced parts. They tooled up to make glovebox doors when virtually all glovebox doors survived. No shortage of used GB doors and they are cheap to by, yet someone tooled up for those. Same goes for many parts, such as cowl covers. I've never bought a truck that needed a cowl cover or glovebox door. When you consider how much prime hubcaps go for I think someone would be wise to reproduced these. Let's not forget about all the people who have dogs as well

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
Gotta be mighty rich to feed a dog out of one of those hubcaps!

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
You know how some treat their dogs these days, like they are their children, dentist visits, health insurance... I don't think there are universities for dogs, so should be plenty of funds for a dog dish. I recommend the stainless.
Let's remember, unfortunately, the cost to produce these hubcaps should be calculated by the yen.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
It kind of pains me to think of all the caps that we relegated to dog dish duty when I was younger. My grandpa was a Chevy guy but he was also a farmer and he just beat the snot out of some really nice trucks over the years, and then fed the dogs with the caps. I think I can even remember some being used as target practice once or twice.

Re: Dog dish hubcaps
That truck is beautiful. You throw some nice caps on it, and PRESTO! My 72 came factory with the P01 covers, but I had a second set of wheels powder coated, and bought a nice set of stainless caps from a member. Painted the bow tie blue. I switch back and forth for a different look.
