the insert is 3/16". I had originally asked for 1/4 but they forgot and used 3/16 but it's a lot thicker than the original metal and the detail looks good to me in the pictures. I have a couple other small pieces being made to match and use in other areas on the truck. And they're making my trailing arm spacers for free because of the mistake on the thickness which is cool I gotta get back over there to work. Talked to CPP today and they were trying to ship out the last front end parts today or tomorrow at the latest so I'll have them by next week. That will let me get the chassis back as a roller.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
It is going to replace the entire area from under the angled part of the upper gate to the bottom and from the left to the right side totally. Will be welded flush with the face and the extra will sit inside the gate and not be noticed of course. Had to be that thick for detail to show up and still have good thickness to the panel.
If you look at the blazer picture where I threw the insert in imagine the lettering in the middle w/out being the metal color...the gate will look like that gate w/out the handle and smoothed out....just the lettering in it.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
Well, I have been very busy with my new job (happy to have it ) and in my evenings doing little projects around the house, and weekends getting the yard done and family events so not much progress on the truck. Jason has had a bunch of side work come in as well so he slowed for a bit but just got back on the cab work.
He got the final cab support welded on, filled more of the rocker seam, started smoothing the door jams to prep for the bear claw latches, and shaved the other rocker pinch weld. Also started the drip rail shave. I like the look with it simply cut off and welded shut at the point he's done it. End result should be something like Eric D's "Silver Bullet" shown below

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
Well, first a story....I went to NAPA to get some small parts for the build. They had the rear U-joint in stock but didn't have the U-bolts for the lower A-arm. I was going to have them order it but shipping was going to cost more than the bolts. Looked around but couldn't find them cheaper so I went back to the NAPA to order them. Walked in and the guy I talked to was there. He says wait one minute...walks to the back, and presents me with the u-bolts. He had them transfered at No charge and had saved them for me. $8 for the four (CPP wants around 60 shipped for these) They are 9/16 so I will have to enlarge the saddle holes, but I wanted the larger ones. Thought that was cool of him to do in today's business world of poor customer service
U-bolts

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
Here are the pics from tonight
Passenger rocker Driver's rocker Filling in the seams to make it nice and smoooooooooth All cab supports done...couple small rust spots in floor patched.... Started filling in unneccesary holes in the door jambs...did I mention I want it smoooooooooooooooth Started on the drip rail. I'm having him weld the seam at the corners where the factory just put in seam fill....feel safer with that welded that the panels won't want to shift....

It's from the shop Mekdad works at Wayment Mfg. He's not a vendor but I had his card from the radio plate and they were very reasonable for this.
pm me if you want the contact info.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
He's going to weld the seams then weld this area he cut before moving any further with the cutting. Not 100% what some would call shaving the drip rail, but I like how the finished one above looks where the line still carries around to the doors....

VA,
I like the shave drip rail... I thought maybe you fabricated the tailgate panel. How much did they charge you for the machining it? Just curious?

The panel ran around 250 shipped...they sourced and purchased the steel, machined it, and shipped it. Should have it in a few days...

Wow! sounds like a good deal to me. That is a big part to do in one set-up. I really like the idea. Very original! Can't wait to see it on the truck. Keep it going!

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
I know, I know....
I'm waiting on the insert to arrive and right now I don't have the gate I'll be using....the one I ordered came in damaged.... I did go over tonight and got everything cleaned up for the trailing arm spacers to go in. Got to paint the brackets and under them but it was too cold and humid tonight so I decided to wait. Cleaned up some more of the suspension parts to prep for paint and also cleaned up the brake lines. they look like stainless they came out so clean! Did a good deal of grinding on the cab. Jason patched up a couple more small areas in the floor so the cab is 100% rust free now!!! He started tacking up the drip rail and cutting more off. I got the seams at the windshield cleaned out so he can weld those up when he gets near them for extra support of the panels to prevent them from separating when the drip rail is cut (just to be extra safe)
