Next came the removal of the rear engine/bellhousing crossmember....
- - - Before removing the crossmember, I took a reference measurement of the engine position, just in case I needed it in the future: - - - Out it comes..the upper rivets were a bit harder... - -

I really can't stand weak clutches....I had this one laying around, thats why I used it....Would grab 2nd, but not 3rd...even with these tires...
- - Man I really need a POSI !!! - - Pulled cover... - - Here are some shots from under look'n up...You can see the rod-ends I used on my clutch linkage... - - Econo Thift Heater...works well actually...could used some defrost hoses, though -

Re: Project "Rock-a-Billy".....Saga Continues.....
Next, I used the forklift to lower the 700 from my overhead storage.
- - - I found this on CL from a local vender I deal with regularly. It's a unit outof an IROC. This one does have the side pressure ports, so I shouldn't have to tap the cover. He informed me that this is a 98,000 mile unit, but was shifting perfect. If it needs to be re-built, then I can do that my self....Regardless, it's still has to go in for mock-up. - - - - I didn't have a flex-plate yet, but wanted to check the fit....slid right in perfect... - - - - -

Re: Project "Rock-a-Billy".....Saga Continues.....
- - This is where I left off on Sunday morning. Looks like I will have to cut my collectors loose and reweld them...as they were set for the way the engine was sitting on the rear crossmember. Looks like the tranny will have to go up higher in the pictures. I picked up a flex-plate off the Wagon's OG race motor, so I have that already. Still need an overdrive controller, cooler, driveline, etc. The crossmember I will probably fab up. - - More MISC pictures: - - Bossman wont be happy when he comes in this morning...Shoulb be on this.. - - Anyone need some old iron.... - - - - - One thing I found was the factory built sheet (not very long) Truck was built in Fremont, California !! Kinda cool...plant is still there...bout 15 mins away....now known as NUMMI....big brother has been there since 1971 - -

Great work John! Joe will be VERY proud of all the pics!
That o/d will make it a pleasure to drive on the interstate plus the iroc converters have a little bit looser stall than the truck 700r's. |

John, you have got such a damn nice place to work on your truck. That's a real luxury to be able to walk under your truck and work on it like that. Thanks for all the great pics.

Re: Project "Rock-a-Billy".....Saga Continues.....
Hey John,
couple questions. you referred to side pressure ports and not having to tap the cover, can you explain? also, you gonna buy or fab a transmission cross member. I'm picking up a 700r4 for the '66 in the next couple weeks. also can someone tell me what flex plate I need. it is a '91 700r4 going behind our 283 replacing the granny 4 speed Thanks

Re: Project "Rock-a-Billy".....Saga Continues.....
John, I'm considering upgrading my clutch linkage. Did you use a kit for this? I found this on-line from Speed Direct.
http://cmc.speeddirect.com/AMAZING/i...%2D125&eq=&Tp= I have a three speed overdrive and am considering a Autogear Muncie overdrive four speed as an possible upgrade. It will give me a fully syncronized transmission and allow for some speed shifting. Your 700R4 conversion is certainly of great interest. Have a great day. Rick

Re: Project "Rock-a-Billy".....Saga Continues.....
The one that's on the end of the cable.....JK...not sure yet. I purchased a replacement cable a while back as my truck didn't have one my I got it. When I get the truck driveable, I will find out how off the speedo is then go from there...

I plan on building my own crossmember...which will bolt to the stock location...and incorporate the e-brake. Bowtie Overdrives has a really nice one, with e-brake for $175....I could make one with materials I already have. As far as flexplate, any one should work. I'm using one from a 350/350TH. You will need flexplate bolt, which are shorter. Quote:
